I’m sorry, but people pointing out that requiring masking in 2026 is ridiculous isn’t “hate levied at masking”. You literally cite a story of health experts and professionals not doing this, and somehow fail to reflect at all. “Marginalized” isn’t a get out of jail free card for “being critiqued”.

It feels to me that if you define “kinder and gentler” as “harasses people that i think are bad”, you’ve just described a place where your ingroup is more popular. I think expecting your cultural allies/near allies to only harass people who you think “deserve it” is asking for trouble.

“Sub communities with their own moderation” works well if and only if the community is small enough to vote with its feet if modding sucks. This is why small forums and subreddits work well, but large subreddits and FB groups are a disaster.

I’m of two minds on the “locked away” aspect. On one hand, old forums (normally) were public once someone found them. OTOH, the way 2010s era internet encouraged hunting through someone’s past tweets to dogpile them was extremely unhealthy, and anything that makes that harder is good.

Maybe we weren’t meant to all be in one space. Maybe we should return to niche forums with 50ish regular users, w/ one or two resident assholes everyone sort of puts up with, instead of constantly warring factions of discordant cultural groups over virtual territory.

This is the same accounting mistake articles on this topic make - not counting non-transaction liquid assets is a bizarre choice that doesn’t map onto actual finances. Even if we did use this number, $5300 is dramatically more than “one month of expenses” for most households.

I get that tech salaries are incredibly high, and being used to them makes more normal salaries seem tiny in comparison, but they really aren’t! People in the US are mostly pretty well off, and grouping 60% in a “paycheck to paycheck” bucket elides the differences that make the poor truly struggle.

See below. The study in question assumes that people making 100k+ are only slightly less likely to be “paycheck to paycheck” which is absurd. It’s also predicated on people not counting many savings/investment tools as such.

There’s a lot of race realist/Steve Sailer types in the community that nobody wants to shun because they’re “someone else’s enemy”. If you combine that with hostility to outsiders, the victimization “we’re just cute thinkers!” card becomes very tiring.

I don’t think tpot is fascist, and I believe many genuinely see including fascists as commitment to the “don’t exclude anyone ever” view. But frankly, this belief doesn’t extend to your outgroup (all journos), so it’s not really a principle. “I can excuse nazis, but not NYT reporters” is….unpopular.
