Brad’s Blog: Gay Desert Guide Week of Oct 5, 2026
Thirty five years ago we were in the throws of the AIDS epidemic. it was deep into its second decade and spreading with devastating, unchecked momentum. AIDS became the second leading cause of death for men aged 25-44, but would soon become the leading cause. It was with that as a background that Streetbar opened in 1991. Our 35th celebration over the weekend was attended by at least one surviving patron of that bar that we could identify during our KGAY Out & About broadcast. Through all the joy of celebrating that milestone is the reality that many early visitors to Streetbar did not live to see even the turn of the century.

Photographs & Memories was a Jim Croce song I remember from the 1970s. That Croce song stayed with me as it explores looking back at old relationships through old photographs. I was too young at the time to have any of those memories rattling around my brain. But this week, I was living that song - searching for photos of me and my classmates ahead of my 50th class reunion. I found something else I wasn't' expecting: pictures of lost loves from the days when we still took our film into the local drugstore or photomat.

Jackie Kennedy gave an interview to LIFE Magazine just days after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. She told the reporter that each night before going to bed, JFK loved listening to the title song from Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s 1960 Broadway musical Camelot. The enduring legacy narrative was of JFK as King Arthur and his administration as a lost golden age harkening back to the times of Camelot. And so it goes with our retiring Palm Springs Police Chief, Andy Mills, and the first lady of our city, Cathy Mills.

Seasons of Love, the masterful song from Rent sings "Five thousand twenty-five thousand six hundred minute" to describe the value of a year in human life. It's a moving song that to this day brings me to tears when I hear it. It will be 2,628,000 minutes that I've owned KGAY. So as I reflect on five years of operating KGAY Palm Springs, it's with a combination of nostalgia, pride and determination.
