Five Years of Taliban Rule in Afghanistan: Female Human Capital and Economic Consequences
Five years after the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, their restrictions on women and girls have created a severe human-capital crisis with long-term consequences for Afghanistan. The most damaging measure has been the exclusion of girls from secondary school and women from universities, making Afghanistan the only country where secondary and higher education are formally prohibited for females. This means that an entire generation is losing skills, qualifications and professional experience that would otherwise contribute to the country’s teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs and public institutions.

March 26, 2026. The Journal of Population Economics is now ranked A* on the Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC) Journal Quality List. This is the highest ranking a journal can achieve, reserved for a select group of journals demonstrating truly exceptional global impact. The A* designation places the Journal among the most elite publications across all business and economics disciplines globally.

New in Journal of Population Economics w/ @rnajamr + Raja Kattan: Education pays—even more for women in Afghanistan. Each year of schooling raises income by 3–7%, but bans on women’s education/work turn gains into large economic losses. Human capital denial = national loss. shorturl.at/HW0uK

TEACHER VOICE: We don’t have a math problem in Arkansas or in the United States. We have a culture problem
The idea that some people are “math people” and some are not is a myth. All people can learn to do math. Where people differ is their mindset. We can change that.
