Yes, check out share.google/CI0AeRiqh5BV... for the AI research community vision as of 2018. Many of the technical issues remain unsolved (see integrated intelligence report). These systems will remain brittle and hard to maintain until some of these issues are solved

Today’s high end chips are not going to be the most effective or most efficient. So I agree with doubling down on AI for Science, but that’s separate from more data centers

But the compute is getting cheaper and more energy efficient. Many cutting edge applications use ML technology that doesn’t require GPUS. Group called “Climate Science AI” had speakers claiming this at a recent meeting. Check out Rashomon sets for instance.

Agree with but one correction: it’s only “generative AI” that needs GPUs. There are other forms of AI in daily use at industrial scale that don’t have such a destructive footprint.

Before the dot-com bubble it was a pleasure to be in the valley because people were about ideas. Then it became all about money

I’m not surprised. Factually isn’t what they’re optimized for, and hard to see how they could be given their training

Are user-customization of ASR dictionaries on the roadmap yet? I miss that from Dragon nearly every day.

Great essay. As an AI researcher who sometimes helps OECD try to communicate what’s happening to policymakers, it is immensely pleasing to see sensible pushback against the current hype.

Vinge also wrote a later paper on why the Singularity might not occur. I don’t remember Gresham’s Law AIs (motorized Ouija boards) blocking the path. But one of his other reasons, entertainment becoming too good, may be a contributing factor here

Wangcheng Xu shows how a hybrid system incorporating CogSketch, a symbolic model of high-level human vision, with off-the-shelf deep learning vision components can be used for diagram understanding. Competitive with VLMs while providing inspectable representations. www.cogsys.org/proceedings/...

Because, given their track record, very likely the only violence was in ICE fantasies. Trib just finally posted the real story about an unprovoked attack where a woman was shot multiple times. Video exonerated her.

Because Disney+ does not respect the First Amendment, i.e. taking Jimmy Kimmel off the air on ABC when all he did was tell the (inconvenient) truth, I've cancelled it and Hulu, which they also own.

Great essay. We’re far from the point where AI systems have sufficient agency that these become practical matters — our work on formalizing social and moral norms could be ultimately abused into something like a governor module — but I think it’s important to do better.
