Need.
Seeing dinosaurs for the first time at Jurassic Park or me seeing these goose horse dinosaur things? Why not both.

The best little guy at the Louvre has a friend!
Two clay sculptures: one a stylized ox with a huge under jaw that sticks out really far and the other a weirdo little dachshund shaped reindeer

Found the best little guy at the Louvre.
a clay... reindeer maybe? but it has the body of a dachshund and a very silly little face with an open mouth like a muppet.

Last spring I passed by and counted over 50 cops “guarding” this Tesla storefront from a dozen peaceful protesters.

Baroque Mode by DonCee Coulter. My favorite from the Black Creativity Juried Art exhibition currently at the MSI.
A city scene with high rises, a horse and carriage, and lots of sculptures rendered in textiles.

Still Life Reviving by Remedios Varo. His last painting and it is a banger. Art Institute, Chicago.
a painting of a round table with a lit candle in the center. The table is levitating, and peaches, apples, and pomegranates are revolving in the air around it. The tablecloth is also revolving and twisting. The whole thing is in a room with gothic arches. totally dope.

Aww, the ancestor of Kate Beaton’s Shetland Pony from Hark, a Vagrant!
A Kate Beaton comic about a fat little Shetland pony ruining a prince’s game with a cute lady. The king says “emasculating my son in front of a rival is not what I had in mind!” and the final panel just reads “you should have specified.” Kills me every time.

On Halsted near Armitage! Stop at the Leonidas Cafe while you're there; the crepes are yummy.
A lil painting of Mario hopping out of a green tube with a sword I found on a wall on Halsted.

Two giant birds, one an actual terror bird with a pink tshirt reading "no" and the other a bigger bird that looks like a terror bird but isn't.

Lincoln Park knows what's up.
Chicago street sweep sign with a huge F letting people know street cleaning is happening Friday. Someone used a sharpie to turn it into a Fuck ICE sign.

If I were to set a horror movie in Oz park the scarecrow sculpture would be the big bad.
Terrifying scarecrow sculpture, mostly because the face looks like it's been bolted on

My PT's office has this model of the vestibular system that looks like a minimalist Bosch sculpture.
A 3d printed model of the human inner ear I. white; for some inexplicable reason there's a tiny little bald head attached to the bit that looks like a snail. Like I get that it's an inner ear but the whole thing remains insane.

This Roman general has an excellent little gremlin making a face on his breastplate. It looks like the guy behind him has a Medusa face on his. Trend alert!

Easily the single best interactive exhibit I have ever seen - my husband nearly threw up. No notes. At the museum in the basement of the St. Louis Arch.
three old fashioned clay jars with signs reading "the smells of cholera." You can uncork them and experience the dream.

In 1884 Carrie Carson sewed two taxidermied chipmunks into a crazy quilt she then donated to raise money for a hospital. The nun who won it declined to keep it (can't relate). Carrie ultimately gave it to her brother as a wedding gift, and now it's at the Missouri Historical Museum in St. Louis.
A close up picture of a crazy quilt with a dozen fabrics, embroidered details, and the taxidermied skins of two chipmunks.

These two paintings are considered to be the most avant garde among Caillebotte's works; they look like photos taken from a balcony. Chicago Art Institute's Caillebotte exhibit; well worth a visit.
A painting of a Parisian traffic circle from above. The people look like blobs, there's very little color. This is an a pre - car era, so you can see a single horse and carriage. The important thing is the shadows: it's late afternoon. A painting of a man in a bowler hat and suit sitting on a street bench seen through the branches of a tree from a balcony above.

Kudos to whoever put this sculpture in Palmer Park!
a sculpture of a giant hand clutching the sawn off trunk of a tree; the tree is at least 20 feet tall and the hand is as tall as a person. There is also a cicada sculpture sitting on the tree.

This lamassu is part of a recreation of an interior court in the palace of Sargon II, Assyrian king in 721 BCE. He lives at the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, one of the best musuems in Chicago and free to boot!
A stone sculpture of Lamassu: head of a king, body of a bull, wings of an eagle. The statue has five legs so it looks correct from the side (shown in this picture) and head on.

"Untitled Anxious Red Drawing" by Rashid Johnson at the SMART Museum. In related news, the kids go back to school tomorrow and I start a new job!
A white canvas painted with thick, messy, red scribbles laid out in a grid pattern: 3 down, 6 across.

I discovered that “Avant Garde Book Binder” is a thing I can be when I grow up at the Art Institute’s exhibit of Mary Reynold’s work. Mary was widowed in WWI, and instead of setting down and remarrying she moved to Paris, made friends with artists and pursued her own art and training.
A book’s end papers with the imprint of ferns on a reddish, sandy background with woodblock printed insects.

It fills me with glee that "Consort: For Men" hairspray made it into the National Air and Space Museum exhibit on threats to the climate.
A can of hairspray with a silver lid. The can has a black and white image of a man in a suit, because this hairspray is for MEN who don't truck with ozone destroying fluorocarbons.

I first read about neolithic spear throwers in Jean M Auel's The Mammoth Hunters and I still can't quite envision how they work? The Smithsonian Natural History Museum is doing God's work here with the display but ALAS.
A reindeer antler carved into a spear thrower that looks like a reindeer, of the reindeer was lying on its tummy and had a spear coming out of its butt

A delightful self portrait of Nasta Rojc, a Croatian artist who joined the anti-fascist resistance with her life partner, Alexandrina Oslow. Weightwood 659 exhibit, The First Homosexuals: The Birth of a New Identity.
A portrait of a lady with short, dark hair dressed in a hunting jacket and skirt. She's carrying a rifle and her hair and skirt are blowing in the wind
The background is vague - gray skies, a mown hayfield, hills in the distance.

Saint Margaret, who I assume is the Patron Saint of Nosiness, at the Chicago Art Institute.
A medieval wood sculpture of a lady in a crown with thick braids looped over her ears. She has a little animal (lamb? dog?) lacking a head under one hand and a closed book in the other. She is leaning over and looking down, probably because she's listening to do e hot gossip in the pews below.

A Kodo set used to play a game called Kumiko, in which participants are challenged to identify which incenses are burning and in what order they were lit. Kodo has been considered one of the three great art forms in Japan for the past 500 years (the others are flower arrangement and tea ceremony)
A dark wood box inlaid with lighter wood flowers and vines, containing a set of inlaid knife handles and individual little packets. Also a box of small wooden blocks with different inlaid plants, and a board with mother of pearl inlaid flowers. The set is used to store different types of incense and burn them so that participants can guess which scents were lit in which order.

One of the few remaining gliders built by Otto Lilienthal, described by Wilbur Wright as the most important person tackling the problem of flight in the 19th century. Hanging in the National Air and Space Museum.

Excellent guerilla art on Connecticut Ave in DC. I'm a big fan of the tiny duck carefully placed on the base.

A Pullman train playset highlighting how Very Fancy the accommodations were. Currently living at the Pullman National Monument, which is well worth a visit.
A train car playset in a red box with a handle. There are two dolls: a man in a top hat and a woman in furs and a gown and hat. The dolls are in seats and there's a bed on the upper level. There's also a little closet door, which is closed. I hope there's something cool in it.

Hokusai of The Great Wave game was struck by lightening at 50 and made some art about it. I like that this looks like a panel from a comic book.
A Japanese wood print in black and white of a man getting struck by lightening. It's nearly 200 years old and looks like a panel in a superhero comic book
