Overshadowed by the Department of Education yesterday was the invasion of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, an independent agency with a tiny $276M in federal funding. It pays for things like digital access for rural communities, e-books, summer reading programs, and support for museums.

#DailyGood Now and then, I like to go back and play Civilization VI just for kicks. I've loved the game since the early 90s. I haven't tried VII yet (old dog/new tricks). But my favorite thing about VI is being in Emperor mode, you just get knights and you see your neighbor already has helicopters.

#DailyGood The struggle is real to find something good each day. Mostly I'm hunkering down working or rage scrolling. I'm getting back in shape and avoiding alcohol, sugar, most processed foods, etc. (ugh). But, that doesn't stop me from wanting this good. Hopefully soon. The Jungle Bird cocktail.

If you're listening to a song, and the singer calls out, "we be jammin," and that singer is not Bob Marley, I can pretty much guarantee you they are not, in fact, jammin. Nor have they ever been jammin.

#DailyGood I usually read at night instead of watching TV. Given the state of *things*, I needed an escape so I started @johnconroe01.bsky.social "The Demon Accords Series" because I wanted fast paced stories of someone just kicking evil ass. In just two weeks I'm 7 books in and it fits the bill.
The cover of John Conroe's "God Touched." The title is at the top in A red and yellow flame color. The image background is the New York City skyline at night from across the river in colors blue and back with a big moon. shining. The authors name is at the bottom in white with "The Demon Accords Series" written beneath.

#DailyGood As I've noted, I'm a 60s spy spoof fan. But that comes from a love of James Bond. Not that he needs defending but, I think Timothy Dalton was a really good Bond and it was the 80s production and writing that mostly failed him. Best of his two? The Living Daylights. Give it a rewatch.
A movie poster for The Living Daylights. The title is in the upper left. To it's right is Timothy Dalton as Bond pointing a gun in the famous focal eye used in all bond opening credits. Below the title is Dalton as Bond, again in a circle, with just a head shot of him in a tux holding a cigarette near his mouth. The background for the poster is illustrations of action scenes from the movie - a car with ice outriggers, a horse chase, a tank, and the bond guys. In the bottoms right corner is an attractive blonde woman in a white dress lying on her side.

#DailyGood Ars Gratia Artis - that, to me, is folk and outsider art. For some artists, it's a compulsion. For others, it's their core and why they keep going. No on exemplified this more than the late Daniel Johnston. I miss his simplicity and pureness, in his music and his visual art.
An drawing by Daniel Johnston done in a folk style, similar to say a high school drawing or doodle, depicting three skulls across the top of the pieces, each with a difference symbols as their background, and below left, a red woman with green hair, in a red dress, saying in a speech bubble, "Maybe easy living could be just as right. Don't you think?" In the middle of the picture is a three-headed ducks with a lions body. To the right is a man with a very large head that appears to be open at the top like a bowl. He is wearing a brown suit and physically resembles the Frankenstein monster. In the middle below the duck creatures is a spiral of various colors overtop the words, "Rock and Roll" written in red.

Image from the internet. An illustration by Daniel Johnston on a white background. The top of the page is a rectangle made pink marker covered with text that says, "I have faith in things that love and love goes round and always was the strangest most strongest Evil's taboo wins all the time and victory upon victory till the end forever." The drawing consists of two humanoid creatures holding guitars. The creature to the left is green, hairless, and holding an orange guitar. The creature on the right is similar holding a yellow guitar. Between them is a yellow woman with black and blue hair, wearing a pink dress with large blue polka dots. She is wearing red shoes and below her is written, "I understand it may not matter but belief makes me Strong. Daniel Johnston"

Today's #DailyGood I discovered on my refrigerator. Both my kids (teens) love to draw and are more artistic than I am. I found this doodle on the fridge from my youngest (15), which I first thought was a kids book illustration. She was trying out new markers. Very cute.
An illustration using markers on white paper of an orange cat taking a bath. A sink is to the right, a toilet to the left, and a window is behind the tub and the wall is green. A pink bath mat sits in front of the clawfooted white tub.

#DailyGood I really enjoyed this collaboration. I've been a @richardkadrey.bsky.social fan for years (Sandman Slim) but was not familiar with Cassandra Khaw - but I will check her work out now. A wild ride with a great dose of gritty cosmic and eldritch horror. The Dead Take the A Train
the cover of The Dead Take the A Train by Cassandra Khaw and Richard Kadrey. The author's names are at top in purple on a black background. #DailyGood No, I'm not late to the game. First it was outlaw country and country rock in the 70s, then cowpunk, alt-country, and now Americana. And finding artists who keep that going yet still sound fresh and new is always a pleasure. I still go back, but good to see some going forward.

#DailyGood I'm a mid-century modern/googie/atomic/space age/tiki/ exotica/50s&60s art, music, style, design and culture fan. And I love current artists in this style & other sub-cultures (low-brow, surf, rockabilly, etc). One of these is Scooter, whose Mid-Mod Happy Hour book is a current favorite.
The cover of Mid-Mod Happy Hour, Tasty & Tantalizing Cocktails & Art. The cover if orange, the main title in white in a mid-century style font, with the subtitle below in black. The center of the book is taken up by a 50s style comic illustration of a dark hair man with a pipe in his mouth pouring drinks on a cocktail table. A mid-century modern clock is also seen and a large standing lamp. The illustration is very 50s, mid-century styled and whimsical.A page form the book showing a stylized illustration of Elvis in a Hawaiian shirt is on the left side of the page, and the recipe for the Blue Hawaii drink on the right. Both in shades of blue background, white and red text on the recipe. The pages for the drink Recipe Cheesecake Martini, with an illustration of a woman in a black cocktail dress sitting in a mid-century modern orange chair, drinking a martini beneath a stylized hanging light. #DailyGood Since I'm on a 60s movie kick, I'm a huge fan of 60s spy spoofs, too (Matt Helm, Derek Flint, etc). And also this one - with an incomprehensible plot, horrid action scenes, and wooden villains But, lots of bikini assassins plus a Walker Brothers title tune! Deadlier than the Male (1967)
The movie poster for "Deadlier than the Male." The poster is dominated by an illustration of three bikini clad female assassins, each in their own outlined box with blond, brunette, and redhead in text over their images. Action Guaranteed is stamped over the right woman in the lower corner or her illustration. The top of the poster says "For Hire: Deadly Weapons." #DailyGood I have the feeling I will be needing a lot of comedy in the coming year. Comedies of the 50s and 60s are some of my favorites and this is definite top 5. Fantastic cast, great score, and great direction from Normal Jewison. The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming
The movie poster for "The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming." #DailyGood I never made it to Montana. I had a planned trip once but of course work got in the way. I was always drawn to the landscapes of Russell Chatham and wanted to experience the inspiration firsthand. There's still time.
A field surrounded by trees. A beautiful Russell Chatham oil painting. The field is green and yellow from wildflowers, the trees are and hazy as if in an afternoon sun. Further fields can be seen in the distance beyond tree breaks.A cloudy sky and hill in the distance bisect this painting horizontally with a darker valley filled with trees and fields of grasses in the foreground. Oil on canvas from Russell Chatham. Muted greens and yellows are the major colors.

#DailyGood As a pop culture lover, my #ChristmasGood list leans heavily in that nostalgic direction. So, it's just not Christmas for my GenX-self without the big three Rankin Bass specials. Day 16 - Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, & Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Hermey, a blond elf in a blue hat and jacket with pink tights, touches the tip of a young Rudolph's red, glowing nose in a snowy field with trees in the background. This color still is from the 1964 stop-motion special Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer produced by Rankin Bass.Frosty the Snowman has just come to life and is giving a slight smile while holding a corncob pipe in his mouth with his left hand. His right hand is pointing up as if in an "a-ha" moment. He's just come to life so yes, the snowman has hands. He's also wearing the magic top hat that brought him to life, the hat is gray with a black band a pink flower. The sky behind Frosty is pink tinged as the day is coming to an end.A stop-motion, young, red-headed Kris Kringle, just coming into his own as Santa Claus, is reading a list of good girls and boys in his workshop while a penguin named Topper, in a black and yellow striped scarf, watches on with goofy eyes.
