Can see that. I’m not sure there’s a great demand for drinking during a match. Might be different at different grounds. Have to say I’ve seen far more “moderation” at football since retiring. (No reflection on the press box!)

Different scenario entirely. Cricket lasts six hours, often in sunshine. A quiet lager or two is pretty common. Nothing like the energy of a 90-minute football match - but, as I’ve said here, I don’t see a lot of drinking during a match, even at half time. Fans save it for the pub, usually.

I rarely drink during a match, or before it. I save it for after. Interestingly, most chat on my Spurs app group has been about fans throwing their beer in the air. I don’t get that. It might be a thing at some American golf tournaments but I can’t remember seeing at football in the UK.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social If the citizens of Piddington village think they’re in some modern version of Passport To Pimlico, they are not quite getting either irony or post-war existential angst.

I can agree with much of this, but not all. KP has never been an easy item. He is passionate, a good thing in a sea of, let’s face it, mediocrity. But he has a bit of “victim” about him: never wrong, always put upon. Cricket does not encourage the whinging rebel. So this rebel has much to prove.

Probably true. Do you think that might be because the education system is so dreadful most kids don’t know who won the Civil War?

If you don’t have a, “somewhat favourable view of socialism”, you don’t have any public health care, transport, pensions, garbage collection, clean streets, a police force your can trust, an army to defend you… and a president with at least half a brain. So, good luck, guys!

I do not believe for a minute that 26 per cent of the population are so deluded they would vote for the corrupt and incompetent shower of Reform to be in charge of this country. Not in a month of Sundays are these gangsters fit to run a whelk stall.

@paulhayward.bsky.social did you watch the burying of the priest’s curse in the GAA final! And probably the longest victory speech by the Mayo captain since Castro was in his pomp.

How Cole Palmer “missed the boat” is also a mystery. He would have brightened up the attack no end.

Despite the Tory media bending over backwards to laud her generally ordinary performances at PMQs, Badenoch will be one of Labour’s biggest assets if still the Leader of the Opposition at the next General Election. She is unelectable.

Every day is, “the here and now” in politics, as Harold Wilson almost said. It was sad to see Starmer step down but, as a realist, he knew the jig was up. No PM leaves on a high. Ever. He knew, too, Burnham was the man to see of Farage. And so it is proving. And that’s, “the here and now” of it.
110
Kevin Mitchell @kevinmitchell50.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
They also knew Reform were still the biggest electoral threat, after the May local elections. And, yes, Farage was digging his own grave, day after day. But, if you’re leading a fight on points, you can still go for the knockout.

Kevin Mitchell @kevinmitchell50.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
Burnham was far and away the best candidate- as Starmer and everyone else with a functioning brain knew.

Hard to disagree with any of this. He was like a boxer on the ropes for much of his premiership, when he should have been on the front foot. Not all his fault, but his judgment was found wanting too often. Gaza, winter fuel allowance and Mandelson did for him in the end.

Maybe take a look at the way Streeting lobbied to block Burnham - not in support of his prime minister but to clear a path for his own challenger. Starmer’s inability to galvanise cross-factional support with such a huge majority was his downfall.

Kevin Mitchell @kevinmitchell50.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
So you’re happy with the way he responded to the genocide in Gaza - falling in to line with Trump in support of Israel. That was not leadership, that was weakness. He has many strengths; decisiveness is not one of them.
110
Kevin Mitchell @kevinmitchell50.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
“Bloody opinion polls” might well be an irritant, and not always right, but they should not be ignored. As for “how to deal with Israel”, you have to be joking. Israel is a rogue state, aided by arms from the UK and other purblind supporters. Starmer waited way too long to respond to IDF excesses.
100
Kevin Mitchell @kevinmitchell50.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
Fine. Look at that history then. While the media have unfairly worked Starmer over for two years, he did not set out his stall with conviction, he failed to articulate his many achievements, he gave Israel a pass over the Gaza genocide and generally lacked political sharpness. Good man, wrong job.

Kevin Mitchell @kevinmitchell50.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
Agree and disagree. Starmer has done a lot of good things and not received proper credit. But Burnham is the man to see off Farage and the shambles on the far right, as he showed in the impressive by-election win.
