Maybe Google shouldn't strip non-ascii characters when training AI
a google search for 'atoms in the universe' returns an AI 'answer' of "There are an estimated 1078 to 1082 atoms in the observable universe."

Suggestion for @phanpy Threads web has a nice affordance where people you don't follow have a little plus sign in that you can click to follow them. It turns into a tick when you do. (The tick is only in the immediate post-follow context, normally people you follow are unbadged)
Screenshot of threads web ui showing 2 users' posts in a thread, one with a circled + sign, I e with a tuck.

After the riots, Keir Starmer should tell us the truth about our country. This is why he won’t | Nesrine Malik | The Guardian www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/a…
What he should say is that people have been fed lies. That he is going to finally tell us the truth. That immigration is not responsible for the housing crisis, or for the one in the NHS. That asylum seekers being housed in a hotel is not the reason your high street is empty, your industries mothballed, your public spaces scorched, your councils bankrupt, and your community spaces shuttered. That we have laid at the door of immigrants the consequences of an entire economic model that has defunded the state and privileged big businesses and private capital, and concentrated asset accumulation in the south of the country with no foresight or plan. That immigration is not the biggest problem we face; that would be the disgrace of inequality and rising child poverty in the sixth wealthiest economy in the world. He will not say any of this, because Labour cannot be seen to threaten higher taxes or higher spending. Better to blame a lack of growth, and then be muzzled by the implicit cosigning of austerity when immigration is blamed for its consequences.

Reporting of the latest UBI test programme is ignoring the key finding, obvious to anyone who knows low income people, that their first impulse was to spread the wealth to others. This thinking is so alien to economists and financial types that they barely discuss […] [Original post on xoxo.zone]
“Cash provides increased flexibility to support others.
Recipients of the cash transfers also provided significantly more financial support to others. As a percentage of the average spending for control participants, we find the greatest increase on support to others. Spending on others increased by an average of $22 per month—a 26% increase relative to control participants. This measure captures spending on gifts to friends and family, loans to others, donations to charity, and alimony payments. The visualization below shows the impact of the cash transfers on monthly spending across categories as a percentage of the average spending among control participants.” Bar graph shows help to others is the biggest spending increase

We're surrounded by the signs of pervasive low-level brain damage on every side. Having come through an acute pandemic wave of COVID19 in 2020, governments everywhere now seem to be in denial that the pandemic is ongoing—and we have vaccines that diminish the acute impact of the virus from life-threatening to merely "a bad cold". But it's not a bad cold! It causes widespread inflammation throughout the lining of the blood vessels, including the brain's circulatory system. Cognitive damage is apparent and is one of the symptoms of long COVID: it causes symptoms ranging from stroke and Parkinsonism to dyscalcula and even dementia. If you've noticed poor, erratic, or angry driving in the past couple of years, road manners are one of the more evident signs of what's going on. Cars are a proxy for bodies in public space and elderly drivers are notoriously bad; we're now seeing a lot of aggressive, oblivious, and inexplicably bad driving behaviour routinely, and an uptick in accident rates. There may be other less obvious side-effects: I suspect the angry political discourse is to some extent inflamed by the brain inflammation of the folks who think COVID19 is over.

AI Winter is coming www.wheresyoured.at/pop-culture
Covello believes that the combined expenditure of all parts of the generative AI boom — data centers, utilities and applications — will cost a trillion dollars in the next several years alone, and asks one very simple question: "what trillion dollar problem will AI solve?" He notes that "replacing low-wage jobs with tremendously costly technology is basically the polar opposite of the prior technology transitions [he's] witnessed in the last thirty years."

I voted, but the UK doesn't give you "I voted" stickers (apparently it was proposed in 2013 and only 1 person voted for it) so I made my own. If you voted, post it too petition.parliament.uk/archived/pet…
