I will say that my artist HATES my fade routines, and there are a number of places in the game where I am deviating from this type of fade in/fade out to appease him.

Sorry, I forget not everyone speaks in hexadecimal. :) Here is the NES's color palette. Essentially subtracting $20 is an easy way to turn it two shades darker in the same color family.

I essentially turn the screen black, and then there are three stages of fade before it's fully faded in. First I subtract $20 from the fully faded in color. Then $10. Then just the normal color. If the subtract results in less than $00 I just turn that color black for those frames.
