Oh also fun fact there was a Mr International Club Baths contest for a bathhouse chain held in Chicago a couple years before Mr. Gold Coast became International Mr. Leather. Chuck Renslow owned the Chicago Club Baths and sent a contestant. Etienne did the poster art. Coincidence? 👀

For San Diego it's kinda become a minor tradition this decade that we all get nice photos in nothing but our sashes.

(And yeah, mostly bars early on, but also a few bike club runs. Oldest title I've found yet is the California Motorcycle Club Mr. Carnival from the mid 60s, which was just "hot guys compete to raise the most money". I know the Hawks club in LA had an early Mr. Leather contest in the 70s as well.)

Ooh, will have to pick your brain on that. I'm working on a book about titles and contests. Mostly sifting through old Drummer issues and a couple other pieces of print and reaching out to a couple archives so far!

Anyway yeah it's a very silly policy, I'm glad my producers didn't care, and you can find a whole lot of old porn and stuff being sold with titleholders fucking and doing kinky shit as the DRAW. And Mr. Drummer/IML Luke Daniel drank champagne out of his own boot on stage.

I'm also getting the impression on general that in America at least by the 2000s there was a lot of mythologizing of leather as being about "honor" and "tradition" blah blah "Old Guard" and that intuitively feels to me linked to a more sterile view of titles. But I'm just guessing. Research needed!

To guess, since the period I've been reading about (70s/80s) titles are still pretty sex/partying forward, probably emerged as a side product of the shift towards titles being more for fundraising and activist PR in the 90s or 00s - and maybe also a few titleholders being publicly messy liabilities.
