Years ago, I started writing a short story. The idea started to take shape during the pandemic, and I eventually dug into it, wrote a draft, let it sit for months, came back to it, thought it might have potential, revised it, and let it sit for more months.

The sun breaks through the clouds, creating a rainbow in Rocky Mountain NP in Colorado. Notice the elk in the background of the first image. Most of them aren’t even looking at the rainbow. Their loss I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️ Click and scroll for the full pano. #rockymountains #nationalpark #coloradophotography

If you need me, I’ll be daydreaming about taking a last second flight to Spain to see the total solar eclipse tomorrow. I took these shots during totality in 2024 in East Burke, Vermont. It’s a truly surreal experience. #solareclipse #eclipsephotography #landscapephotography #eclipseart #vermont

In the past 6 months, I turned 38 and steepened my obligatory, middle-aged descent into birdwatching. On a totally unrelated note, here’s a black-crowned night heron I stumbled upon one at Horn Pond in Woburn, MA… #birdwatching #birdphotography #birding

I know many of us have moved on to winter, but it takes me forever to process photos. So, here's an impromptu sunset shot from October captured on the shore of Kezar Lake near Mt. Kearsarge in New Hampshire. #landscapephotography #newhampshire #art #sunset #calmlake #reflection

The downside to dynamic conditions is trying to keep up with the constant changes in light and composition. This side of Loon Island on Massabesic Lake boasted most of the fall color when I made my visit, and I ended up having only a small window that allowed for a good view of it in soft light.

Tannery Hill Covered Bridge in Gilford, New Hampshire. Which angle do you like better? Usually I have a preference on my favorite composition from a certain spot, but there’s never been a clear winner here for me. #photography #landscapephotography #fallfoliage #newengland #art

Clearing fog at sunrise on Massabesic Lake in Auburn, NH. I’d been eagerly watching the forecasts to find a time to get these kinds of conditions. Aside from getting buzzed by a cormorant that flew out of the fog right in front of me, it was exactly as I had hoped #NewHampshire #nature #photography

Small pine-covered island emerging from dense morning fog on a calm lake; warm golden sunrise glows through the mist above, with faint ripples dimly visible in the foreground water. The image is of Loon Island on Massabesic Lake in New Hampshire.

This is one of my favorite shots I’ve ever taken. It was located ten minutes from where I lived at the time in Medford, MA back in 2019. I love the image itself, but finding moody conditions and a composition I liked at a suburban pond not known for landscape photography also elevates it for me. 1/3

From a recent evening of scouting some of the local trails around my new place in southern New Hampshire. The fall foliage still has a ways to go in my area, but I’m hoping to spend a few mornings at this spot in the coming week to explore some compositions and catch some fog rising off the water.

I'm always surprised by how my favorite photos differ from what others prefer. Images that I've written off are sometimes the clear winner to someone else. Take this classic skyline angle from Fan Pier in Boston. Which do you prefer: Sunset or Twilight? #boston #photography #photos #art #fanpier

The world continues to descend into madness, so, I don’t know, here’s a photo of a tree at the edge of a canyon. It’s probably a metaphor or something. #landscapephotography #photos #art #nature

The Milky Way over Franconia Ridge in New Hampshire. One of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken and absolutely the one I had to work the hardest to get. Not pictured: gratuitous leg cramps & sleep deprivation. #landscapephotography #photos #art #franconiaridge #newhampshire #milkyway #whitemountains

The core of the Milky Way above Franconia Ridge in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. A dimly lit path leads from the bottom of the image along a mountain ridge to a peak in the mid ground. Yellow-orange clouds just over the peak reflect light pollution from nearby towns below. Above the clouds the Milky Way and its gas and dust clouds are visible centered over the mountain.

As a landscape photographer, I often find myself planning out photos and making many attempts before coming away with an image where all the necessary weather conditions and timing perfectly align. That process is usually part of what makes the final image so satisfying. 🧵1/ #photos #art #boston

A brass duckling on the right half of the image with nine small brass ducklings following behind her in a line leading to the upper left part of the image. The ducks are on gray brick stones with rich brown mulch and then green grass beyond. The upper third of the image shows a park--Boston Public Garden--with some green trees and the early morning sun bursting through one of the trees.

Details in the volcanic landscape of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Not included in these photos: 1.) The wheezing sounds I made trying to hike up a steep cinder cone. 2.) The wheezing sounds I made sprinting back down the cinder cone after seeing nearby lightning. #landscapephotography #art

The Milky Way behind Skull Rock in Joshua Tree National Park. An important image for me, personally and as a photographer. It spent last year on Joshua Tree's annual pass and is part of the new @natural-landscapes.bsky.social book. #landscapephotography #nationalparks #joshuatree #art #photos 1/

A scene from Joshua Tree National Park in California. The image shows a rocky desert scene at night with sand and a few shrubs in the foreground, tan-orange rock formations in the mid-ground, and a dark blue night sky with the core and arm of the Milky Way running across the top half of the frame. The rock formation featured prominently on the left side of the frame resembles a skull. The core of the Milky Way is positioned on the right side of the image with hues of blue and very pale yellow.

Sometimes as a landscape photographer you study weather forecasts and conditions you hope for never materialize. Other times you look at forecasts and think "If I wait at Bryce Canyon long enough it'll probably clear up and stop snowing." It did. 🤷‍♂️ #landscapephotography #photos #nationalparks #art

The image shows a red-orange, rocky ridge in Utah running from left to right across the image, the top of which is lined with green conifer trees on the center and right side. Parts of the ridge and cliff face below are dusted with snow. Clouds and fog surround the ridge, making what is the most visible a long triangle shape with the point at the bottom of the frame.

Three rows of red-orange rocky ridges dusted with snow and dotted with green conifer trees run from the bottom right to the left, center, and right sides of the image where they meet the base of a snow-dusted slope. The slope has gullies from erosion which caused a layered look.

I love the visual part of photography, but it doesn’t always feel complete to me without using the experience and resulting photos as a guide for written storytelling. Here’s a collection of photos from Death Valley and the experience behind them. #photography #travel medium.com/live-view/fo...

The image shows a title in bold black lettering for a story on Medium. It reads “Forces of Nature in Death Valley National Park.” A smaller subtitle below reads “And trying to figure out how to get rid of the sand later.”

Another from Death Valley. After the wind died down overnight, I made a pre-dawn trip to Artists Palette so I could shoot shapes in the colorful badlands before they were in direct light. Slow, mindful photos like this are by far my favorite. #landscapephotography #art #nationalparks #photos #DEVA

I managed to track down a behind the scenes video taken a little before this shot that gives a much better idea of the conditions that led to this photo. It also probably gives a pretty good idea as to why I had sand stuck in places I didn’t realize I could get sand stuck in 😐

30+ mph winds in the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park. Even after completely dismantling and cleaning my tripod after this trip, it still faintly grinds when some knobs are turned. Well played, nature. Well played, indeed… #landscapephotography #art #nationalparks #photos

The golden layers of Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in late day light in Death Valley National Park in California. Strong winds are blowing sand over the dunes, causing a slight glowing effect as the sand scatters the sunlight. Hazy mountainsides can be seen in the distance behind the tallest dune.

The Milky Way rising over Lassen Peak in Lassen Volcanic National Park. Taken with a Nikon D750, 50mm f/1.8 lens, and the nagging fear that a mountain lion was watching me from the higher ground shrouded in darkness behind me. #landscapephotography #photography #photos #art #nationalpark #nature

The core of the Milky Way behind a snow-capped mountain in Lassen Volcanic National Park in California. The mountain, Lassen Peak, is dimly lit by star light in he lower middle portion of the image and a forest of conifer trees occupy the bottom of the image in the foreground. Within the Milky Way, several pink nebulae are visible on the left side of the image, including the Eagle Nebula, Omega Nebula, Trifid Nebula, and Lagoon Nebula.
