After recent comments from local Green Party candidates and activists @alistrathern.bsky.social and I have written to @zackpolanski.bsky.social Party policy disagreements aside, antisemitism must not be tolerated in any form, and all parties are responsible for taking action to stamp it out.

Dear Zack,

We are writing to you regarding the deeply concerning behaviour from several of your candidates and activists within the North Herts and Stevenage Green Party during the current local elections.

You will be aware of Philip Notley, your candidate for St Nicholas, who in the wake of the antisemitic attacks in Golders Green said on video this week that “Israel shouldn’t exist”.

Another candidate for the Green Party in Symonds Green, Jack Downie-Webb has shared antisemitic conspiracy theories on X.com, about the Israeli response to October 7th attacks.

Separately, Faiq Lodhi, a member of the North Herts and Stevenage Green Party who describes himself as a “lead green organiser”, compared the Israeli Prime Minister to Hitler and questioned what Netanyahu’s relatives would do to “end the family line”.

As we are sure you would agree, these views are entirely unacceptable. Taken together, they raise serious concerns not only about the conduct of the individuals involved, but also the standards that have allowed people expressing such views to stand as candidates or hold senior organisational roles in North Hertfordshire and Stevenage Green Party.

This is particularly serious in the context of a spate of antisemitic attacks in recent weeks, which have understandably left many in the Jewish community feeling fearful, isolated and under threat. At such a moment, political leadership requires clear and decisive action to draw firm boundaries around acceptable conduct from local election candidates.

We are therefore seeking clarity on the steps you will now take. Specifically, we ask that:

All candidates and activists identified above are formally suspended from the Green Party, pending the outcome of disciplinary investigations; and

You confirm publicly, in line with your comments on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, that you advise Green voters not to vote for these individuals while these matters are being addressed.
