Commitment to community has guided everything I have done on the Commission, and it was beyond moving to hear the words spoken by the broad and diverse coalition in support of that work.

As the second-longest tenured member of the Commission, I look forward to sharing my experiences and insights from a decade working closely with SFPD with our new commissioners.

All of this was achieved while crime in the city reached record lows. San Francisco proves every day that public safety and reform and accountability are not mutually exclusive.

And the Commission passed a landmark policy that reduced racial disparities in traffic stops for the first time in decades.

SFPD completed the 272 reforms recommended by the US Department of Justice in 2016; the Commission and Mayor Daniel Lurie selected Derrick Lew to succeed Chief William Scott after ten years of transformational leadership.

Kevin Benedicto @kevinbenedicto.bsky.social · 05/06/2026

The Commission and the Department adopted and passed a record number of policies modernizing SFPD policies and procedures.

These last four years under the extraordinary leadership of President Cindy Elias and most recently under President C. Don Clay have been the most productive four years in the Commission's modern history.

So proud to stand alongside 10,000 lawyers in 50 cities who marched in support of the rule of law and reaffirmed our oaths to protect and uphold our Constitution.

Kevin Benedicto @kevinbenedicto.bsky.social · 08/05/2025

But there is still more work to be done. I am committed to finding a Chief of Police who is ready to build on this progress.

000

Kevin Benedicto @kevinbenedicto.bsky.social · 08/05/2025

SFPD’s progress is proof that evidence-based, effective reforms can build trust and keep both communities and officers safe.

100

Kevin Benedicto @kevinbenedicto.bsky.social · 08/05/2025

Under Chief Scott’s leadership, SFPD enacted major reforms to improve transparency, accountability, and fairness in policing. During his tenure, the city saw a historic drop in violent crime, property crime, and the lowest homicide rate in nearly 50 years.

Kevin Benedicto @kevinbenedicto.bsky.social · 08/05/2025

I look forward to working collaboratively with my fellow members of the Police Commission, Mayor Lurie, the Board of Supervisors, and most importantly the community to conduct a national search for a new SFPD Chief.

Kevin Benedicto @kevinbenedicto.bsky.social · 08/05/2025

Even when we did not agree, he was always willing to work together towards our shared goal of making SFPD the best department it could be. I am grateful for his partnership and wish him best in his future endeavors.

000

Kevin Benedicto @kevinbenedicto.bsky.social · 08/05/2025

I have always considered Chief Scott a trusted partner in efforts to increase transparency, accountability, and fairness in SFPD. In particular, I am very proud of the work we did together on SFPD policies on use of force and on combatting racially biased traffic stops.

100

Kevin Benedicto @kevinbenedicto.bsky.social · 08/05/2025

Chief Scott has always been a conscientious and dedicated public servant and has led the San Francisco Police Department through a period of significant change and reform. Thanks to his leadership, the SFPD today is a very different department than it was a decade ago.

Kevin Benedicto @kevinbenedicto.bsky.social · 08/05/2025

I first met Bill Scott when he was named Chief, and I was working as a pro bono attorney on criminal justice reform issues. I have worked closely with him over the last eight years, including as a member of the Police Commission for these last three years.

Tonight I attended the 30th anniversary of the death of Jim Guellf, killed in the line of duty by a heavily armed and armored suspect. After his death his brother Lee helped pass new laws to limit access to weapons and tools of war. His friends, and family have kept his memory and legacy alive.
