⁉️ Why do some interactions make sense only if you know what happened before? Our (Arnulf Deppermann and myself) new ROLSI special issue on interactional histories explores how shared experiences across time shape social action, activity, recipient design, etc.. www.tandfonline.com/toc/hrls20/5...

Friends, I think Ghent University should hear from us as the eugenicists are out in full force. This letter is from academics there to counter the ridiculous letter supporting the white supremacist now being called a "whistleblower" by his ilk You can add your name👇🏽 docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

"Those 8 children in Shreveport aren't a natural disaster. They're the consequence of choices—legal, political, cultural—that can be made differently. The only reason it feels otherwise is that we keep pretending the alternative is impossible. It isn’t. We just haven’t been willing to want it enough"

From “The Simpsons” house genius John Swartzwelder, interviewed in The New Yorker by Mike Sacks
It's the only way I know how to write, darn it. But I do have a trick that makes things easier for me. Since writing is very hard and rewriting is comparatively easy and rather fun, I always write my scripts all the way through as fast as I can, the first day, if possible, putting in crap jokes and pattern dialogue-
"Homer, I don't want you to do that."
"Then I won't do it."Then the next day, when I get up, the script's been written.
It's lousy, but it's a script. The hard part is done. It's like a crappy little elf has snuck into my office and badly done all my work for me, and then left with a tip of his crappy hat. All I have to do from that point on is fix it. So I've taken a very hard job, writing, and turned it into an easy one, rewriting, overnight. I advise all writers to do their scripts and other writing this way. And be sure to send me a small royalty every time you do it.

Made a thread of this, so it's easier to read I moved from philosophy to psychology in 2018. In philosophy these kinds of arguments & debates are what you're trained for & do. It was a culture shock when I arrived in a psych dept. Critique, debate & argument were depicted as rude & undermining. 1/

"'How are you?' These are the three most useless words in the world of communication." This compelling (but wrong/daft) assertion is based on #communication myth rather than how we actually talk 🧐 And asking "how are you" can even save lives... 🧵 1/15 [Bringing #EMCA threads to Bluesky!]
