Every September, Somerville closes down Union Square to throw a street party for a jar of marshmallow spread.
Marshmallow Fluff was invented in Union Square in 1917 by a man named Archibald Query, who made it in his own kitchen and sold it door to door around the neighborhood. He later sold the recipe to two men from Swampscott, and the stuff went on to become a New England pantry fixture and the reason a few generations of kids around here grew up on fluffernutters.
The What the Fluff? Festival started in 2006 as a small and deliberately ridiculous tribute to that piece of local invention, and it has grown into one of the biggest days on Somerville's calendar. There is Fluff limbo, Fluff musical chairs, a cooking contest that reliably produces things nobody should eat, a brass band, and someone in period whiskers playing Archibald Query himself. Thousands of people turn up. Everyone leaves sticky. I
What makes it work is that it is completely unpretentious. Somerville is not claiming Fluff is fine cuisine. It is claiming that something got invented on this block and that is worth a party, which is a pretty good way for a city to treat its own history.
Union Square has changed enormously in twenty years. The festival is one of the few things that got bigger instead of getting priced out.
