Bridges are excellent things, and we need more of them, in every sense. Moor Park just got Preston's second one of the year. Well done to everyone involved.
Against a background of blue sky and fluffy white clouds and leafy trees, a tall crane lifts a green trelliswork bridge. People in high visibility jackets can be seen to one side, dwarfed by the height of the crane.

Why would anyone want to put a data centre in space, at huge expense, outside of any regulation or legal jurisdiction?
Anakin: We are putting a data centre in space.
Padme, laughing: Only for legal AI, right?
Anakin, silently staring:
Padme: Oh.

Very atmospheric in the park this morning, with trees looming out of the mist, the Jurassic screech of the bin lorry, the chuckling of the magpies, and a clarty ballet of men in high visibility jackets listlessly moving mud from where it was yesterday to where it will be tomorrow. #Preston #Parks
A footpath disappears into the mist framed by the silhouettes of two large trees. Above them a few wisps of cloud can be seen in a chalky blue sky.

Reality versus the model. Always worth checking the latest rainfall observations before deciding whether to believe the local forecast. A good example today where the reality (10:55, left picture) is much wetter than the forecast (11:00, right picture). #weather #prediction #uncertainty

Sage publish a whole series of books and handbooks on research methods. Researchers have their favourite books depending on their favoured approach. Mine is 'Thematic Analysis' by Braun and Clarke, which describes a particular method but has a lot of good general practical advice too.

For comparison, here is the forecast for Malvern in Worcestershire where it is not raining so much. Maybe it is just me, but I find this dark cyan colour scheme really hard to read. It's not a lack of contrast, just a visually dominant background. #UX #colour

As an example, the page today is a funereal grey. They clearly want it to be 'grim up North' for much of the year. The odd inconsistency in font size also grates, but that's usually below the fold unless I happen to have a large browser window for some reason. #UX #colour
Met Office weather forecast for Preston in Lancashire, reflecting the overcast sky and rain in the forecast by a dark grey background and matching sombre colour scheme for the whole page.

Last orders at the isobar. The Met Office is going to retire their old website design and force us to use the new one, which I really dislike. #UX #fail
NEW - This design will be turned off soon. Use our new design.

The data available externally thanks to the AT protocol can have weird search consequences. I did a Google search for my W handle and it almost got it right, but merged the information about somebody I follow on Bluesky with mine. To be fair to Google, I've reported the mistake so they can fix it.
Google search AI overview results incorrectly saying that I am a writer and an editor and based in Bristol.

Preston has held the UK rainfall record for the most rain in 5 minutes since August 1893. Prolonged dry weather is unusual. Despite the bit of rain we had last week, the Ribble is still low enough that the herons could probably walk across it without getting their knees wet. #Preston
View eastwards along the river toward the Tram bridge. The stony river bed is exposed along a broad margin on both banks leaving a shallow flow in the middle.

The official statistics were released recently. For accidental vehicle fires in cars there has not been much change in recent years and if anything the trend is down. So, perhaps they are just getting reported more 🤷(www.gov.uk/government/s...).
A graph of accidental vehicle fires for cars from 2010 until 2025. The line begins near 9000 in 2010, dips noticeably to just under 6000 in 2020, before rising steadily to just above 7000 in 2025, but is mostly between 7000 and 8000 a year during the period.
