Heater cowed his shoulders and flitted his eyes left and right. Maggie saw
beads of sweat form on his forehead. She’d been about to ask if they were
waiting for their dates to arrive when she realized they sat at a two-top table. Oh.
That explained why Heater was acting so nervous. She tried to think of a
gracious way to excuse herself from the conversation, without calling attention
to the fact that she wanted to give the men their privacy. But the longer she
waited, the more awkward it became. Zeke came to her rescue.
“If you gentlemen will excuse us, I’m going to steal Maggie back now.”
They said a round of goodbyes, and Maggie felt like a fool.
“Oh, Zeke. I can’t believe that happened. I almost…” She trailed off as Zeke
led her out of the back door to the wraparound porch on the bay.
“Is it going to be a problem for him at work?” Zeke asked. He held her gaze
as if her answer might change things between them. Maggie thought for a
moment. Florida was progressive—certainly compared to the Confederacy, even
compared to the United States—but not that progressive. Many people would
have a problem with—well, her mother would’ve said ‘temperamental’ men. Her
father would have said worse. But her parents were gone. Doc had always been
open-minded. If he hadn’t then he wouldn’t have hired Maggie or Sparky. But
upon reflection, she couldn’t see how it was any of Doc’s business. Nor hers, for
that matter.
“No.” She answered. “No, it won’t.”

“Lieutenant Colonel Beauchamp,” she greeted him, extra emphasis on the
“lieu”.
“Miss O’Rourke,” he replied, drawling out the ‘mizz’ as he turned to face
her.
Zeke wasn’t a tall man, nor was he a short man. But his height was the only
thing average about him, Maggie felt. Wide shoulders, narrow hips, built to go
quick in a straight line and hold his ground when he got there. His brown skin
caught both highlight and shadow, lending his features a chiseled appearance. He
wore his hair short on top, with a close fade on the sides that complemented his
tan Air Force uniform. Regulation allowed airmen to forgo their jackets in summer, but Zeke still wore the long-sleeved shirt with a tie, even when most
men wore the open collared short-sleeved shirt this time of year.
He turned to lean against the wall, easygoing. Yet somehow he projected
strength, suggesting it was he who held up the wall, instead of the other way
around.
She crossed the room, leaned her right hip against the side of the desk, and
crossed her ankles. She might have noticed Zeke’s eyes track from her chunky
leather Mary Janes, up what he could see of her legs, to the pink and green dress
she’d picked for tonight’s get-together, before finally meeting her own eyes.
Zeke might have noticed her eyes as he unbuttoned the cuffs of his shirt and
rolled his sleeves to the elbow, then crossed his arms in a way that emphasized
the muscles and veins of his forearms, while simultaneously making his chest
and shoulders look a little broader.

Maggie led her east for several miles until the island disappeared below the
horizon.
“When I say so, we’re going to fly in opposite directions, then turn back
towards each other for the merge.”
“The what?” Sparky asked.
“The merge.” Maggie repeated. “We’re going to fly almost head on. When
our wingtips cross, we’re going to turn. You’re going to try to turn faster than me
and I’m going to try to out-turn you. Whoever finishes the turn first is going to
get to shoot.”
“Okay. Got it.”
“When you think you’ve got a clean shot, say ‘guns, guns, guns’ and we’ll
roll out and reset for another attack. I’ll do the same if I line up on you. When
we get back, we can watch the gun footage and see if you got me.”
“See how many times I got you, more like.” Sparky said.
“Yeah, sure. Head north. I’m going south.” Maggie said. She rolled out and
flew away. Sparky did the same. While they took their spacing, Maggie
continued. “The aircraft are equally matched, so this maneuver is going to come
down to skill.”
Sparky looked over her shoulder. But couldn’t see Maggie.
“I’m ready.” She said.
“Bring it around.” Maggie told her. Sparky turned south.
The Brick Outhouse rolled out of its turn a couple of miles away.
“Aim to pass just outside of my left wing.” Maggie said. The two aircraft
closed on each other at five hundred miles per hour. The Brick Outhouse had
gone from a speck on the horizon to the size of Sparky’s hand in a matter of
seconds. Sparky furrowed her brow and readied herself for the turn.
“Go left now.” Maggie said an instant before they passed.
Sparky rolled until her bank indicator showed sixty degrees. Then she pulled
back hard on the stick. The g-force pushed her into her seat. She tried to look up
and over her shoulder, but couldn’t find Maggie yet.

“Yeah. The first rule in a dogfight is ‘don’t let the adversary get into a
position where she can shoot you’. The second rule is ‘get into a position where
you can shoot the adversary’. if you can’t do either of those—and quickly—then
you need to leave. Bug out and try again another day.”
“He who fights and runs away?” Sparky asked.
“More like ‘You can be an old pilot, or you can be a bold pilot, but you can’t
be an old and bold pilot’.” Maggie answered.
As they finished their burgers and moved on to the fries, the conversation
drifted away from flying.
“Saw you dancing with Rabbit Friday night.” Sparky leaned forward across
the table, “Just dancing?”
“Just dancing.” Maggie replied, hiding her reddening face behind her glass
as she took a drink.
“Aw.” Dottie said, disappointed. The vinyl booth creaked as she sat back.
“Colonel Beauchamp behaved like a gentleman.”
“Oh, so he’s Colonel Beauchamp now?” Sparky would not let it lie.
“He is to you, kid sister. Anyway, Zeke and I enjoyed a nice evening drinking
and dancing and when it was time to call it a night, I told him to go sleep it off in
his office and I walked home alone. Happy?”
“Aw, you mean he didn’t even try?”
“No. He didn’t try. Maybe ‘cause he respects me too much. Or his mother
raised a gentleman. Or he knows it’s up to me, as much as him, and I’ll take him
home when I say so.” Maggie’s voice got a little too loud.
“Yeesh, fine. Sorry.” Sparky raised her palms in apology “Be careful he
doesn’t get bored and move on to someone else. You know why they call him
Rabbit, right?” Sparky lowered her voice again.
Of course, Maggie had heard the stories of how Rabbit got his name.
“Hops from place to place and humps like a…?” Sparky let it hang.
“Don’t believe everything you hear. No pilot’s name ever had more than ten
percent truth behind it.”
“Well, I just…”
“Come on. Lets get back up there. I want to get back to the island before the
storms roll in."

They walked in silence for several minutes before Doc spoke. “Maggie, I owe you an apology. I didn’t even consider how you must have felt. About
Amelia, I mean.”
“What do you mean? She was your friend, not mine.”
“We weren’t friends. Colleagues.” He stuffed his hands into his pockets.
“Couple of parties after races. Photo ops. Stuff like that.”
“Still doesn’t answer why I should feel down about it.” Maggie kicked a
lump of upturned earth. It turned out to be a wheel rut from the lawn tractor, not
the molehill she’d suspected.
“I just thought… you know… women’s rights and everything… it’s a
setback.”
“I mean, sure. I admire her.” Maggie kept to the present tense. Doc wasn’t
ready to admit Earhart had died. “She’s an excellent pilot, and she’s done a lot
for women… in California. I don’t know how that helps me here. Florida already
has women pilots everywhere but combat birds.”
“There’s a momentum to it, isn’t there? She didn’t get the ball rolling, but
she gave it a good push to keep it moving, don’t you agree?”
Maggie sighed.
“Yeah. She did. But Amelia Earhart didn’t put me in a fighter cockpit.” She
stopped and put her hand on his arm. “Peter Delaney did.”
“Aw, come on.” He lowered his head and turned away before she saw him
blush.
Another time, Maggie might have teased him for being emotional. Today she
smiled. “Hey, I want to take Dottie up today for a lesson. What do you think?"

The first character I wrote when I began writing seriously was Dr. Sandeep Bose, a computational physicist at Sandia Labs who had to rescue his son from a hellish dimension in a story I envisioned as a cross between Hook and Event Horizon. I couldn't quite make it work so it remains unfinished.

Now is a really good time to get into retro-gaming. You can create digital backups on an Xbox 360 with just a thumb drive. Then you'll have your physical discs but you can play the backups without wearing out the optical drive. And you won't have to rely on a shady corp delisting your games.
