exorcising my grief; the second part of my wha grief series is finally finished. this time with a focus on qifrey ★ ocean breathes salty ☆

Ocean Breathes Saalty by holographics
Fandom: Witch Hat Atelier
Summary: Qifrey deals with the aftermath of Beldaruit's unforeseen death; reflecting upon his time as his apprentice.

Notes: I have been working on this on and off for weeks, but I did not expect it to be this long lmao. Work burnout is real unfortunately, so this has taken me quite some time to write. I’ve taken a few breaks to enjoy art and grieve and rest and study during this endeavor and I think it’s paid off quite a bit? I really enjoy writing Beldaruit so this was a fun little exercise even if it was also an exercise in exorcising my grief. I feel like I’m finally getting more comfortable with characterization, as well as fully getting back into the swing of writing again.

This work is largely inspired by a few different poems that I find myself coming back to over and over in my own grief. Most especially I have been feeling the weight of Grief by Barbara Crooker. The poem used in the fic itself is Dirge Without Music by Edna St. Vincent Millay.

I’ve said it before, but this community is chock full of so many amazing artists and writers and it has been a pleasure to feel inspired by so many. I hope I can also inspire others to create some day.

You don't need to read the first fic in the series but I do make a brief mention to the events in it.

Apropos of the Mourning Dove's Grief by holographics
Fandom: Witch Hat Atelier
Summary: Confronted with a truth she has long been avoiding, Coco seeks respite in the only way she knows how—in the arms of her new family.
Notes: This is a very personal piece. I very recently lost my grandmother and this was a way for me to process my own grief so I didn't completely break. This may end up as a series eventually, but I am not quite sure yet.

(There are no major spoilers in this one, but it does contain some tidbits only manga readers will fully grasp.)

happy #wipwednesday this bad boy can fit so much grief in it

“Coco?” Her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden voice resounding against her bedroom door. Olruggio’s voice was soft and amiable; calling out to her in the darkness of her bedroom. It made Coco flinch a little bit, leading to her tightening her grip on Brushbuddy. They let out a soft “pwee!” at the gesture.

“Shhh,” she whispers to them, attempting to keep as quiet as possible. She dries her tears with the sleeve of her cloak, muffled whimpers caught in between.

“Sorry for comin’ in without knockin’, but your door was wide open…” Olruggio explains, gently

rly happy with this snippet

The faint aroma of birch and wood sorrel drifts into his nostrils as he breathes in and out rapidly; a faint taste of lumber gracing his lips. His chest rises up and down in trepidation—his shaking breaths the only witness of sound. As he continues to exhale even more excessively, his breaths become more and more short. The melody of each practiced breath echoes around the solemn room, his heavy, tepid gasps tingling the tips of his fingers. Like the small, fragile branches of a tree, so too do his fingers ache, and crack.

Something Comforting
by holographics

Summary: Qifrey has a horrific nightmare, and Olruggio attempts to comfort him. ((bold)Please read the tags for content warnings! + Spoilers for the manga, up to Chapter 93(/bold.)

Tucked away underneath the restricting blankets of his mattress, Qifrey groans, tossing and turning in his sleep—hands clenched tightly into fists, anxiously clutching his sheets. He continues to writhe and thrash about in his bed as he begins to sweat profusely; breathing erratic.

The heavy door of his bedroom is re-enforced with a hefty chair, barring any who would dare try to enter. Encompassing his room in addition, is a barrier spell—muffling all sounds coming out of the room…

Oh dearest Qifrey… no one will come to save you like this. Is that a blessing? Or a curse?

Secrets are a heavy burden. And nothing brings more relief than letting them go.

In the far reaches of the countryside lies a village where a woman, a mother—was turned to stone in an instant. The sullen remainds of her home lay quiet, bereft of its inhabitants and left to time. Surrounding it are branches of guard briar, encompassing the area with its many arms and limbs—much like a mother protecting her children from danger. The trees surrounding it have gone still, lacking the resplendence of their leaves—their brittle branches swaying haphazardly in the harsh, winter wind.

In the cold light of winter's day, the gradual snowfall sends a cold breeze beneath Coco's cloak. It comes down slow, and light, beqeathing beneath it a frigid breeze that sends a chill up her spine. The trees around her have become barren, their branches wavering in the wind. The pure white of the snow is harsh to her eyes in the light of the day, making the biting cold seem even harsher in retrospect.

Casually glancing up at her Master—Qifrey—Coco squints. The blinding light of the alabaster snow combined with the radiant sun is intense. She strains to keep view of him, but she does not falter. The light of her surrounding makes Qifrey shine—seemingly like an acute, brilliant glow that threatens to engulf any who dare to come too close. Like an angel in its duty to ferry the dead to their destination in the afterlife.

But it's also so, so wonderfully warm... Coco ponders. She can feel its brilliance like a gentle, soothing lullaby that she remembers her mother singing to her as a smaller girl. These things, Coco feels, make Qifrey seem like a conundrum she cannot seem to solve. For a child such as her, perhaps this feeling could fester a turbulence in her heart, but given everything… It only makes her even more fascinated to learn more. To see more. To keep getting closer.

She unexpectedly feels an unusual, subtle tug at her heart that makes her want to pull away, but she defies it.
