The platform of the leftist candidate in France is very focused on cost of living. Seems strange that there aren’t more politicians of this type in the U.S., where inequality is more pronounced.
Mélenchon has called for a sweeping economic overhaul. He wants to increase the minimum wage, cap prices on fuel and essential goods, lower the age of retirement to 60, and adopt a wealth tax on the assets of people with net wealth of at least 100 million euros, about $112 million. He also proposes to massively invest in green technologies.

…and the effect on people when AI surpasses the achievements of mathematicians or chess masters:
yes, this must relate to chess masters as well. until recently such pinnacles of success were accessible only to the very few; now Al has abruptly/rudely leveled the landscape. think if the young Mozart had been confronted with the great music he would/ could write in a lifetime, a few minutes, or seconds, of Al calculation. how devastated, how de trop the human life. that distinctive life. such pinnacles of achievement have been what makes us uniquely human, at least until now.

J.C. Oates on the important things in life:
"surpass the US economically"-- is that the measure of all things? materialism, possessions? really? in actual life, we look around us & see that beyond a certain point, of economic security, people are made neither happy nor unhappy by their material possessions & investments. other, more essential & less measurable elements of life come to the fore as more significant. economic competition is exhausting, self-consuming. we see in our oligarchs the emptiness of such lives & we may see in others, around us, the fullness of another kind of life.

I was curious about the last time there was a Canadian firing squad… It was in 1946. German soldiers who had murdered prisoners of war were executed by the Royal Canadian Air Force. #execution
DEATH DECREE IN RCAF COURT Two German Soldiers Will Be Shot for Death of Airman Aurich, Germany, April 7. - An R.C.A.F. tribunal concluded -its third war crimes case Saturday by sentencing two former German soldiers to death and a third to 15 years imprisonment. Robert Holzer and Walter Weigal were convicted of murdering an unnamed Canadian airman captured at Opladen in the Ruhr in March, 1945, and sentenced to death by shooting Wilhelm Ossenbach, convicted of complicity in the same case, drew the prison term. As Air Vice-Marshal R. E. Mc-Burney of Montreal, Ottawa Saskatoon, court president, read the sentence Holzer's knees buckled. He had to be supported by service police in the court room. Weigal bowed his head and trembled vio-lently. ecoce and catside and weiga | Weigal broke down and wept. Sentences of all three are subject to review and confirmation by higher R.C.A.F. authorities. The defence lodged immediate appeals against the court's findings and sentence. A fourth case was put over for hearing by another court. It involved Hubert Broichhaus, also charged with murder of an unidentified Canadian at Oplanden the same night as the crime for which Holzer, Weigal and Ossen-bach were tried. In the first case before the high-ranking court, Johann Neitz, former German marine corps cook, was convicted of wounding with intent to kill FO. Rudolph Roman of Toronto and sentenced to life impris-onment. Neitz captured FO. Roman after the Canadian parachuted from a crippled bomber near Wil-helmshaven. In the second case, Wilhelm Junge, former burgomaster of the small Bavarian town of Oberweier and Wilhelm Schumacher, former soldier- policeman in the town, were sentenced to death by shooting for the murder of a captured Canadian airman.

POEMS SATURDAY NIGHT AS AN ADULT By Anne Carson April 24, 2017 We really want them to like us. We want it to go well. We overdress. They are narrow people, art people, offhand, linens. It is early summer, first hot weekend. We meet on the street, jumble about with kisses and are we late? They had been late, we'd half-decided to leave, now oh well. That place across the street, ever tried it? Think we went there once, looks closed, says open, well. People coming out. O.K. Inside is dark, cool, oaken. Turns out they know the owner. He beams, ushers, we sit. And realize at once two things, first, the noise is unbearable, two, neither of us knows the other well enough to say bag it. Our hearts crumble. We order food by pointing and break into two yell factions, one each side of the table. He and she both look exhausted, from (I suppose) doing art all day and then the new baby. We eat intently, as if eating were conversation. We keep passing the bread. My fish comes unboned, I weep pretending allergies. Finally someone pays the bill and we escape to the street. For some reason I was expecting snow outside. There is none. We decide not to go for ice cream and part, a little more broken. Saturday night as an adult, so this is it. We thought we'd be Nick and Nora, not their blurred friends in greatcoats. We cover our ears inside our souls. But you can't stop it that way.

@AnnaAnthro “a speech about oak trees”
Mark Carney to the EU Parliament: Our ties are deeply rooted to our lands. In the heart of Germany, above Weimar, there is a wooded ridge called Ettersberg. For decades, Goethe walked, thought, and wrote there.  An oak on that ridge came to bear his name, a living monument to the highest ideals of European culture. As the 20th century turned dark, that same oak became trapped behind the barbed wire of Buchenwald, a silent witness to humanity’s deepest moral failure. Goethe understood that ideals must be fought for, that values do not defend themselves. Indeed, at the end of Faust, the old man’s last vision is of a free people on free ground. Nur der verdient sich Freiheit wie das Leben, der täglich sie erobern muß. “Freedom and life must be earned every single day.” Every day. Not once in 1945, or 1956, or 1989.  Every day, including this one.

Normally Americans have a violent distrust of strong-man leaders. We tend to get rid of any leader who seems te get too strong. We prefer the "regular fellow" sort of leader. No deal. #Canada #tariffs #usmca
Mark Carney: For over a year, Canada has worked intensively and in good faith with the United States to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal. We have been pragmatic, patient, and persistent. Our goal has always been to get the best deal for Canadians, never a deal at any price or on any time frame. Late last evening I instructed our negotiators to return to Ottawa. We cannot accept what the U.S. has offered, and we will not give what they have asked. Canada will match the U.S! new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses. We take this step confident that it is in the best interests of Canada. In the coming days, we will release the details of these new tariff measures, which will come into force the Tuesday after Labour Day.

Willie Nelson has issued a statement against the construction of data centers. #artificialintelligence #willienelson
"I grew up in Abbott, and I still have a home there with farmed land where I can still see stars at night. And now our community, like many others, needs to fight against data centers invading our land. The last thing we need is a loud, water thieving, light polluting, data center anywhere near our town (or any others for that matter). The strength of rural America has never come from big industrial footprints. It comes from generations of people, open spaces, local businesses, and a connection to the land. All of America deserves thoughtful stewardship that doesn't steal farmland (where our essential shared-food is grown) and small family farmers' livelihoods, and not data centers that only destroy the environment around them. Whoever controls food and water, controls the masses. Let's not allow our own demise or give up control over necessary resources in the U.S. and especially in Abbott." -Willie Nelson

From Wikipedia: "The Great Automatic Grammatisator" (republished as The Great Automatic Grammatizator anthology): A mechanically minded man reasons that the rules of grammar are fixed by certain, almost mathematical principles. By exploiting this idea, he is able to create a mammoth machine that can write a prize-winning novel in roughly fifteen minutes. The story ends on a fearful note, as more and more of the world's writers are forced into licensing their names—and all hope of human creativity—to the machine.

have also heard, at the same time,
in baccalaureate addresses, that out
in the world there is an abundance
of dangerous shoals and threaten-
ing storms. The causes they were
never taught, or told to learn for
themselves, so that they might have
acquired an understanding of them
and prepared their minds for the
realities of life that they must con-
front in the future.
An ugly world of flerce competi-
tion; greed for profits; banks bulg-
ing with money while millions lack
employment and other millions are
paid very little for doing hard work.
Frantic preparations for war. Crime
unabated. Politicians and wealthy
publishers doing their best to fan
the flames of race hatred and in-
ternational rivalries.
These are the realities that con-
front the graduates. Could they,
will they be grateful to capitalism
for all the obstacles it has put in
the path of their lives?

The article on Palestine was maybe the one that surprised me the most. Not because it's so different than the present-day left's opinions on Israel, but because it is remarkably similar. It takes a very strongly anti-Zionist position and is predictive of […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
WELL, the people of Palestine are
now engaged in a life and death
struggle with British imperialism
and here, in the two pamphlets by
Paul Novlck. may be found an ex
planation of that struggle and all
it involves.
A peculiar situation has arisen
in that Communists, the most bitter
foes of anti-Semitism, and the only
ones who have stamped it out where
they are in control, are accused of
helping anti-Semites by opposing
Zionism. The author warns the Zionists
that for an exploited people, the
Jews, to join hands with British im-
perialism in exploiting the Arabs Is
bound to bring tragic consequences
in its train. And the ink is hardly
dry on the paper before the rifles
and machine guns begin to sputter
from Raffa on the south to the
hills of Galilee on the north.
A ferocious Jewish nationalism,
and let no one fool himself about
the quality of Jewish nationalism
in Palestine, links arms with British
imperialism against the Arab masses.

Perhaps unsurprisingly there isn't a lot of advertising. The closest to something corporate is an ad for Florsheim shoes. Otherwise, I guess the Daily Worker depended on classifieds from fellow travelers, maybe some funds from Moscow, and Sol's Lunch and […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

There are a couple of cartoons. One portrays the ruling class as clearly racist - the types to cheer for Max Schmeling rather than Joe Louis. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Louis_vs.… 3/6 #Communism #USHistory

It got me wondering about what the communists were up to in America in the 30s, and it turns out there are quite a lot of digitized copies of the Daily Worker, including one from 90 years ago today: June 18, 1936. It contains a lot of reports on union […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
