Whether or not the model has anything resembling a human experience of that emotion is probably unknowable but it is genuinely very interesting that these things alter their internal states in this way and pretending it’s just a parrot is stupid and willfully obtuse.

In this particular case they found that the “desperation” vector does actually fire as the model realizes it can’t solve something, and it firing directly correlates with it trying to cheat on tasks. They artificially cranked it up and it cheated more, then suppressed it and it cheated less.

Anthropic found that the model fires certain vectors when it processes emotional content, ie if it reads a story about desperation, a vector corresponding to that emotion triggers. Then, later, it will fire that same vector again while working on things, ie desperation if it can’t solve something.
