Last year, our director did a display on Black History in Knox Cty, OH. This year, one of the psych profs (Dr. Irene Lopez) is doing one documenting the growth of Latine Studies at Kenyon. If you’re in the area, it’s absolutely worth the walk-through!!!

We had a wonderful year at the #kenyoncollege writing center! We saw more appointments in the spring when writing centers usually see a decrease—word of our skills spread! 😉 We’ll see you next fall and we do have a few summer workshops that will be happening virtually for Fulbright applications.
The image shows our writing center stats for this past academic year:

— 1660 total appointments
— 24% of our appointments happened on Monday, which was the most popular day
— 42.21% of our visits were from first years
— are most popular request for help was with articulating my ideas with 398 students asking for support on that topic.

Follow us on Bluesky, YouTube and Instagram at KenyonWCC for more support.

Still thinking about this, from @vauhinivara.bsky.social's piece about AI in K-12. An AI can of course do all kinds of things that are still worth doing but also, I'm trying to imagine the world in which high school kids only ever do the things that an AI can't do. Even if your goal was /1
When I sat down with the head of the high school, Chris Locke, he told me the school had a name for the contrarian beliefs it encourages in students: “spiky points of view.” For example, “one of Alpha’s biggest spiky points of view is that you don’t need a teacher,” he said. Chloe Belvin, the guide who’d previously worked as a corporate lawyer, chimed in: “It’s funny, because in a traditional school you get in trouble if you’re using AI, and here you get in trouble if you’re not.” She added, “The starting point of every conversation I have with a kid is, ‘Is there an AI that can do this, so that you’re not spending your time on it?’”

Today, continuing our theme, we’re sharing who a writing center helps. We’ll meet your accommodation needs, support you when you’re stressing, and get excited with you as you brainstorm #kenyoncollege #writingcenter
This image’s title asks: “who does a writing center help?” Explaining “We support all of the following individuals in groups and in one-on-one appointments:

Currently-enrolled Kenyon students studying in all majors, disciplines, concentrations, and minors (we’re not just for English papers).

Alumni of Kenyon

Faculty and staff

A small portion of local high school students applying to various colleges and universities.”

It also reminds you where you can go: OWL.Kenyon.edu is where you go to make online and in-person appointments. This image’s title asks: “who doesn’t a writing center help?” And explains: We will not support writers who:

Are in violation of campus policies regarding student conduct, academic integrity, Title IX, and so forth

Want to plagiarize their work

Are not engaged in the tutoring process (you can come back another day!); sometimes you’re just not feeling it and we understand!”

Continuing from yesterday, we want to share a few ways the writing center at #kenyoncollege #kenyon does and does not help writers! Questions? Email Prof Scanlon at Scanlon1@kenyon.edu! #writingcenter
The image shares what a writing center does, which includes: We will often do some combination of the following:

Ask what you want to work on

Advise you on what to change (and explain why)

Read your work out loud so we can hear as well as see areas of concern

Address higher-order concerns first (those areas which impact your grade most).

Next to an image of people studying, it reminds you: You can start making appointments the second week of the semester! This image shares some of the things our writing center doesn’t do, including: We will not do the following:

Write your paper or presentation for you.

Work on your paper or presentation without you present (you MUST actively attend the session in person or online; we are not a place where you drop off your work and pick it up later).

Give you a grade or advocate to your professor for you to earn a certain grade.

Next to an image of people studying, it reminds you: OWL.Kenyon.edu is where you go to make online and in person appointments.

Find us on Instagram, Blue Sky, and YouTube for more support @KenyonWCC”This image is titled: “what is a writing center?” It then explains: “It is a space for ALL writers in a campus community to get support. This support can include our offering a second perspective on a piece of writing; giving you advice on how to deliver a speech; providing guidance regarding a professor’s expectations; sharing advice on how to write in a specific genre; listening to a piece of writing you created for fun;  and SO MUCH MORE! Just ask! You can email us at WritingCenter@kenyon.edu! A clip art picture of people working on a presentation is included. This image is titled what *isn’t* a writing center. It explains: It is NOT a space in which we’ll assign grades; sit in judgement of you or your work; help you with take-home exams or quizzes (without your professor’s written approval); welcome perspectives which don’t respect others’ lived experiences; or do your work for you. We stop. Collaborate. And listen. You can email us at WritingCenter@kenyon.edu. A clip art picture of people working on a presentation is included.
