Mark Haynes, James Foster, Alberto Scopster, Paul Swannell and myself will be The Necessary Measures this Sunday at the Firebug/Duffy's August Bank Holiday Monster Alldayer in Leicester. We're on at 8 P.M. at Duffy's and I, in particular, will be looking to raise hell.

A Short Rant on Matters of Music
As a struggling musician, struggling author, struggling actor, erstwhile film director and freelance purveyor of arcane knowledge about culture, my social media algorithm is now at least ninety percent ads offering advice for the independent artiste about town, usually involving someone pointing gormlessly at subtitles for the intellectually bereft. In the words of the renowned scientist, Dr Bruce Banner: 'I'm always angry.' Take ye old music, for instance. Everyone and their dog (multiple dogs, with distinct personalities, if they're canny) is telling you how to pump up those streams, increase those numbers, engage your fanbase, finetune your social media, et cetera.

TOM BAKER M.B.E. stars in SIR SHERLOCK – The Sickle and the Sea
The game is afoot again! AUK Studios have announced the second adventure in their Sir Sherlock series— made possible by the support of the backers to our previous Kickstarter (‘The Red Letter Day’). We’re doing it all again! However, if you missed the first one, you can grab the CD in the Rewards section of this crowdfunder too. Sir Sherlock is a brand-new set of audio dramas starring Tom Baker M.B.E. as the world’s most famous detective. We weren’t content with an MBE for this amazing actor, so we’ve knighted him as Sir Sherlock Holmes instead! As he said, during the recording session… “I won’t let it go to my head. Unless the King wants to give me a gold deerstalker. Well, they can afford it, surely!” Producer/Director Barnaby Eaton-Jones is chuffed. In fact, he’s at his chuffiest. This may be the Hessian underpants he’s wearing. “Heartfelt thanks to everyone that backed the first in this new series. We’re delighted to be able to set sail with another mysterious and intriguing adventure, this time from the pen of Kenton Hall (‘Sherlock Holmes: The Woman Who Wasn’t’, and other literary treats). We hope you’ll support us in this one too, as Sir Sherlock and Watson are quite literally all at sea.” “Returning from a clandestine visit to the new Soviet Union – on behalf of His Majesty’s Government – Sir Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Watson and Sergeant Emily Lestrade find themselves in the centre of a baffling nautical mystery. On the Russian cargo ship ‘Ryzen’, a body is discovered – seemingly drowned but dry as a bone. Is it revenge? Or revolution? And can Holmes and company bring the killer to justice before all aboard are lost at sea?” HOLMES SWEET HOLMES… Rather than plunging Sir Sherlock and Doctor Watson back into the familiar surroundings of Baker Street, writer Kenton Hall rather brilliantly had them in much less-than-familiar surroundings to create something new for a new set of adventures. As he remembers: “‘Would you like to write…’ Barnaby Eaton-Jones’ message began. ‘Yes,’ I replied. ‘Can I finish my sentence for once?’ ‘Fine.’ ‘Would you like to write a Sherlock Holmes adventure to star Tom Baker and John Leeson?’ ‘Please see the above.’ And that was it. Obviously, my excitement was swiftly overcome by the terror of having to come up with a suitably knotty mystery for the newly knighted detective and his medical helpmeet. After banging my head against a bust of Lenin for an hour, I had it. Holmes in the 1920s meant a changing post-war world. From there, it was only a gangway’s stride to the shipboard Russian mystery that is ‘The Sickle and the Sea’. “I thoroughly enjoyed writing both the script and its novelisation. I hope you do too.” Of course, this clandestine mission meant the exclusion of two what-will-be series regulars, in the form of Lord Lestrade (Norman Eshley) and Norton (Nicholas Rowe) – who both will return in the third adventure, if we are able to crowdfund this one! The late Norman Eshley did record all his Lord Lestrade lines before he sadly passed away and we did manage to get Nicholas back to voice the rabble-rousing Alexander Ivanov for an impassioned call-to-arms at the beginning of ‘The Sickle and the Sea’, and then his tired, troubled self on board the ship sailing back to England, with his wife Lena (Kate Harbour). Aside from the returning talents of Wink Taylor and Conrad Westmaas, we’ve got a cavalcade of guests roles this time round. Michael Fenton-Stevens (fresh from playing the Wizard in the West End’s ‘Wicked’ and host of the hugely popular My Time Capsule podcast) says: “Taking part in this wonderful ensemble piece reminded me of the finest days of audio work, which through costs and Covid (that world famous double act) have sadly, mostly gone. To be one of a group of skilled and practiced professional actors, gathered in a room, willing each other to be better than they would be individually, was a joy.” Kate Harbour (voice actress supremo, for Aardman Animation, and many more), says: “I loved recording Lena Ivanov. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my birthday, doing something I love and being surrounded by super talented friends. I even got a cake and a badge! I can’t wait to hear all the episodes of Sir Sherlock Holmes.” Philip Pope (comedy maestro and composer of every catchy theme tune you can think of) says: “It’s always a joy being part of an ensemble cast for these audio dramas and Sir Sherlock was no exception.” And Ben Perkins (stage and voice actor) says: “AUK Studios have been jointly responsible for gifting actors like me – and the public at large – some unforgettable, genuinely one-off audio drama gems to enjoy. Sir Sherlock is another zinger. Just magic to be a part of, from page to production, and the audience will be thrilled by the results. Holmes is an ambitious property to attempt but Sir Sherlock delivers on every level. If anything ever deserved to, this new treatment of Sherlock Holmes ought to win an army of new fans. For anyone who’s yet to enjoy an AUK Studios audio drama, I couldn’t recommend a better place to begin.” A NOVEL IDEA… Like before, we’re delighted to be able to offer a novelisation of the story (all novelisations will be written by Kenton Hall – who had the ease of adapting his own script this time!). We are also bringing artist Andy Hosegood back to provide the internal black and white illustrations. Aside from Andy, we are super excited that Phillip James Allison has returned to provide the glorious cover for our CD and novelisation (with design by Robert Hammond). Philip’s artwork has been of such a high standard, and so unique in how he produces pieces, that we are grateful he wants to continue providing our evocative cover art for the Sir Sherlock series. SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED… This time we’ve also conjured up a little treat in the form of a glorious Holmesian photo from the archive of Tom Baker’s official photographer, Oliver McNeil. He has granted us usage for a limited set of signed prints (only 15 available, so don’t dilly-dally!). For proof of authentic signature (and signing), here’s Tom himself looking rather pleased with himself after gracing one with his moniker… FULL CREDITS… Sir Sherlock Holmes – TOM BAKER M.B.E. I think about AI a fair amount these days. Not simply because it has had and will continue to have an impact on the industries in which I work, but also because I have no desire to be a Luddite or an old man shouting at the sky. (Although the sky knows what it did.) It’s here. It exists. I want to understand it. However…. From a purely creative standpoint - temporarily leaving aside the genuine environmental and ethical considerations of generative AI - here’s what I don’t see expressed often enough.

'Well, as it happens,' I said, drawing myself up to my full lack of height, 'I've a new book available for pre-order as we speak.' 'Oh yes?' my interlocutor replied. 'And what manner of book might this be?' We had fallen into conversation quite by happenstance, in the cafe of an arts centre; we were at a communal loose end until the baristas on duty had finished catching each other up on the state of their burgeoning romantic ruptures.

Tom Baker Returns to the Role of Sherlock Holmes in New Audio Drama, Sir Sherlock
Tom Baker, best known to everyone as the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who, is returning to play the legendary Great Detective, Sherlock Holmes, in a new audio production… that could be turned into a series of audio dramas! Baker will star in Sir Sherlock, playing the lead role for the first time since being on-screen in the BBC’s 1982 production of The Hound of the Baskervilles and on stage in 1985’s The Mask of Moriarty. Tom has admitted in the past that he wasn’t happy with his BBC portrayal, and so was eager to give it a different flavour this time. He says: “Thanks to AUK Studios for letting me have another go at inhabiting the super sleuth! Third time lucky! I hope I did his pipe proud this time. Enjoy my return to Baker Street – very aptly named, I think! “After I was asked if I’d like to reprise the role, I knew I needed a trusty sidekick and when John Leeson was suggested, I was transported back through time (and space). We’d both had such fun as the Fourth Doctor and K9 in Doctor Who, that essaying Holmes and Watson would feel very natural. And it did. “Though he did insist on being on all fours again, when we did the readthrough.” John Leeson said: “It was a delight to work with Tom again and – at last – this time I was playing the Doctor!” The potential series begins with The Red Letter Day, written by Gary Hopkins, who previously wrote four television episodes for Granada’s Sherlock Holmes, starring Jeremy Brett. Here’s what to expect from The Red Letter Day: It is 1924 and the former consulting detective finally accepts a knighthood. Drawn back to London, away from a quiet life on the Sussex Downs, he is joined by his friend Doctor John Watson when a mysterious red letter leads them back into a murder investigation. What is the secret of Cleopatra’s needle? Who is the second detective, seemingly always one step ahead of him? Between the ancient past and an uncertain future, are Holmes and Watson still the right men to stop a killer in his tracks? Plus, there’s a new detective wannabee on the block – the mysterious, young Norton — played by Young Sherlock Holmes himself (from the Steven Spielberg-produced 1985 film), Nicholas Rowe! Aside from producing a CD of this new Sherlock Holmes audio drama, there is an expanded and standalone novelisation of the new story, written by Kenton Hall, with internal black and white illustrations by Andy Hosegood; written to match the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle books in tone and in first-person narrator. What’s more, Sir Sherlock is directed and produced by a good friend of the DWC: Barnaby Eaton-Jones! He says: “It was a good chum called Ian Kubiak who had the initial idea to do an older Sherlock Holmes, with Tom Baker in the lead role, from a conversation he had with writer Gary Hopkins. And that germ of an idea grew and multiplied and infected us all, after I talked more with Gary. I persuaded Tom to don the deerstalker again, worked out who to cast in the rest of the roles, script-edited, and got to oversee a new mystery for the detective duo to solve. But none of that could have happened if head honcho of AUK, Paul Andrews, hadn’t liked the idea as well and agreed to commission Sir Sherlock.” You can pre-order The Red Letter Day and show your support for further adventures featuring Sir Sherlock by heading over to Kickstarter now. TOM BAKER MBE TO STAR AS SIR SHERLOCK HOLMES IN ORIGINAL AUDIO DRAMA
The game is afoot! AUK Studios is thrilled to announce that Tom Baker MBE is set to star as Sir Sherlock Holmes in a brand-new audio adventure, for release in March 2026. Set in 1924, The Red Letter Day sees the former consulting detective finally accept a knighthood. Having lived the quiet life on the Sussex Downs, Holmes is drawn back to London, where, joined by his friend Doctor John Watson, they are both embroiled in a new murder investigation. Fans can pre-order a CD and/or a novelisation of Sir Sherlock: The Red Letter Day today via the production’s official Kickstarter page: Tom Baker MBE returns to the role of Holmes for the first time since being on screen in the 1982 BBC production of The Hound of the Baskervilles (and being on stage in 1985’s The Mask of Moriarty) Tom Baker MBE says: “Thanks to AUK Studios for letting me have another go at inhabiting the super sleuth. Third time lucky!” He continues: “I hope I did his pipe proud this time. Enjoy my return to Baker Street – very aptly named, I think”. Fellow Doctor Who alumnus John Leeson joins the cast as Dr John Watson. Having previously appeared as the voice of K9, the robot dog companion to the Fourth Doctor, Leeson is reunited with Baker, bringing the same dogged determination and sharp logic to this new pairing. Their real-life friendship and effortless chemistry allow them to slip seamlessly into an older, wiser, and wittier incarnation of Holmes and Watson. As John Leeson says: “It was a delight to work with Tom again and – at last – this time I was playing the Doctor!” The production also features Operation Mincemeat star Nicholas Rowe as Norton, who himself has portrayed Holmes, first in Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) and again in Mr. Holmes (2016), as well as Katy Ashworth (CBeebies), in her audio drama debut, playing Sergeant Emily Lestrade; whilst the late great Norman Eshley embodies Lord Lestrade. This production is dedicated to his memory. A notable supporting cast of Conrad Westmaas, Wink Taylor, Barnaby Eaton-Jones, and Ian Kubiak round out the roles. Sir Sherlock: The Red Letter Day is written by Gary Hopkins, who wrote on the beloved Granada TV Sherlock Holmes television series’ The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (starring Jeremy Brett). Gary Hopkins says: “It’s so nice to be back at 221B Baker Street again… It seemed like unfinished business that Tom Baker hadn’t returned to the part sooner, so I’m delighted that he’s back for these new adventures of ‘Sir Sherlock’.” The production was directed and produced by AUK Studios creative director Barnaby EatonJones, who also served as script editor, casting director, and lent his voice to the character of Weymss. Barnaby Eaton-Jones says: “We hope everyone will want to hear this new take on an old favourite and will support us by backing this Kickstarter. By doing so, it will let us know if you would like more of Sir Sherlock! Let’s get this first mystery out there for everyone to solve!” Full Cast List: Sir Sherlock Holmes – TOM BAKER MBE Doctor John Watson – JOHN LEESON Emily Lestrade – KATY ASHWORTH Norton – NICHOLAS ROWE Lord Lestrade – NORMAN ESHLEY Professor Bellchamber – CONRAD WESTMAAS Professor Digby – WINK TAYLOR Weymss – BARNABY EATON-JONES Cabbie – IAN KUBIAK Writer – GARY HOPKINS Sound Design / Editing – JOSEPH FOX Music (Theme and Score) – BARNABY EATON-JONES Artwork (Cover) – PHILIP JAMES ALLISON Artwork (Internal Illustration) – ANDY HOSEGOOD Script Editor / Casting – BARNABY EATON-JONES Executive Producer for AUK Studios – PAUL ANDREWS Producer / Director – BARNABY EATON-JONES
