Players may have a completely different experience. I’ve wondered how many groups struggle to find dms because of what I’ve been discussing, because that side of the rules is so much more frustrating.

I was going to just say, I started to really play DnD with 4th edition and for a while that edition worked fantastic. The main issues started with 5e for me. Mork Borg, Mothership, and especially Draw Steel were eye openers. I should also mention I’ve been more often a dm in the last years.

where the game balance and rules help with the fun, instead of being a chore to decipher and make work. Again, all my experience with DnD. Matt Colville has I believe discussed how some rules exist more because of tradition even though they don’t work. That’s been my experience.

Your original statement was that it’s generally a good game. I would disagree. It’s a good game on the backs of people that manipulate it to be so. I guess that’s my point. Sure there’s a certain amount of fun we can have regardless, but I’ve now seen what the other side looks like

As a new dm when I started that campaign, I was constantly thinking I was doing something wrong trying to make challenging encounters and having the players wade right through. It was so disheartening, I almost gave up, until watching some of @mattcolville.bsky.social ‘s videos told me it wasn’t me

We all had fun, but that was with me converting every monster from the 4e H series to 5e so that I could try to give my players a challenge, and still needing to either increase monsters hit points or damage constantly. So the work load on me was enormous.

The rules as written break down so much that the game is so unbalanced that it requires “cheating” on behalf of the dm for it to keep working (during combat).

The American Woodcock does a strange bobbing walk when foraging for earthworms just under the soil surface. It's hypothesized this rhythmic walk disturbs earthworms, making them easier to detect. Suggesting: If you walk WITH rhythm, you WILL attract the worm.
