I read up about this when I first saw the data. There was some state policy in the 60s and 70s which encouraged landowners to turn over land for leisure and recreation. So they did. Golf courses were and easy way to change land use and get the cash.

'Map Wizardry' book update and our vastly talented wizardry colleague Wes Jones has created some fantastic cartoon versions of Nathan, John and I. It gives me 2.6525286e+32 possible variations per person. I'm quite taken with the all layers at once look though 🤣

FINALLY... I have found a use for 3D. Puppy Terror Zone Modelling. Create a 3D buffer zone of everywhere a puppy can reach, eat or destroy. Capable of expanding at a rapid rate. Could use for kids too. For safety, sanity, and preservation of non-puppy items.

A little backyard archaeology today trying to figure out what previous owners, and/or the cowboys they paid, did when installing shoddy irrigation systems. Five wires into the controller. Four siphons. Seven pipes. Not at required depth. Leaks. Grrrr.

Finally managed to acquire this super rare Swisstopo Swatch. In 2012 Swatch gifted this model to employees of the Swiss Federal Office of Topography to celebrate the organisation, its founder General Guillaume Henri Dufour, and the "Dufour" map. It was never released to retail.

Personal opinion is there's clearly environmental issues but that's true for so much of everyday life. I would expect/hope it develops in ways that reduce its impact. But as with many things which have an environmental impact we can each take a principled stance if we wish and it's practical to do.

Ian and I are 9 months into our AI mapping experiment. Pace of tech change has been staggering. So has shift in attitudes. Haters now use AI for their own work & find it useful. Those hiding behind fear, and using excuses as warnings is dwindling. They're usually ill-informed.

It's taken us nearly two years and the space needed to get at least some way past the grief of our previous dog passing. He's still missed every day. We, too, travelled and did stuff a dog makes it tricky to do but now was the time, and he's wonderful.
