In other words, it removes professionalism and scientific method from work by making the process and output non-deterministic. GenAI has no reproducibility.

If I may ask, how does this differ from what can be achieved using compute shaders to generate new geometry on the fly? Genuine question from someone trying to figure out graphics programming over the past months.

But they spend a lot of energy and water whereas artists only need some crackers and coffee to produce the same piece. Training artists is much less expensive, whereas training models costs millions and that's with the theft. If they were to pay royalties the figures would be even worse for them.

The face animations for Link could use some rework as well, sometimes the eyes don't show the same expression the mouth is showing, but yes, I'm sure it is awesome work in general, in a scope that is hard to replicate with the same quality.

No mínimo, faltou transparência.

Don't use GenAI as well for anything. It doesn't belong in development/art/writing. As an open-source maintainer, I like my work to have reproducible steps and my userbase to know the projects are managed by someone who cares for the process. That is to me a scientific/professional/caring approach.

I like that it didn't hesitate to answer. It is almost as though it would say next: "Haven't we all? You trying to trip me? Thought I'd hesitate to admit? You must think you're pretty clever, huh? Think everyone has issues with that?"

Fair enough. I'm a big pygame-ce and Panda3D fan, but above all else I think people should use what work best for them and also understand the appeal of a full-fledged engine. Godot, specially, is a great tool with a great community. Sometimes I visit their docs to research or study features/design.

A bug that crashes an app can be swatted. But a bug that secretly cripples it can stay hidden for a long time and even when we notice it, it may also take some time to find it. That's the kind of output you can get from genAI. All that plus the plagiarism+harm to environment.

Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 21/08/2026
Conceptually, I'm not against genAI, because automations, IF they work, are good things per se. But genAI isn't good for most relevant programming tasks. It is actually even worse than a failure:
100
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 21/08/2026
More precisely, if I were to use it, I'd have to manually inspect and test the whole output to ensure it not only worked as expected but also didn't introduce bloat nor other seemingly harmless, needless interfaces that could become a liability in the future.
110
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 21/08/2026
Perhaps I could ask a genAI model to rewrite it, it probably would yield better results than asking the model to write it from the ground up, but again, it is code that I wrote carefully, refactored for good design and efficiency. As I said, I don't recommend genAI for any kind of programming.

I do learn new langs and their paradigms once each couple of years, some I keep using, some not (but am glad for the lessons learned), but even though I've been using Python seriously only for a decade, it would still take years to rewrite everything back into another language.
110
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 21/08/2026
Writing scripts in a new lang takes a few days or a couple of weeks. Picking up design patterns and idiomatic expressions for that lang comes naturally over the first months. But a robust codebase takes years to build.

Everyone in the Python ecosystem should learn those tools, even if not for making games, because they are also awesome tools for prototyping and visualizing ideas.
010
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 21/08/2026
Are you THAT thaumaturge? The one from the tutorials and forum? Regardless, it is great running into another Panda3D dev in the wild! I use pygame-ce for my 2D stuff and intend to use Panda3D for my future 3D projects (already made a few fixture/prototypes).
210
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 21/08/2026
But, yes, it is not for everyone. Even so, I just feel that the number of people doing that should increase, even if just a little. Everyone wanting to make games but no one wanting to tend to the tools is a recipe for getting overly dependent on third-party tools.
110
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 21/08/2026
But if we are talking about one or two projects at most, then perhaps it may be feasible. E g., nowadays I'm not so eager to make my own tools, but I at least have a couple of main tools that I've been maintaining for years while still having time to progress on my game projects.
110
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 21/08/2026
I get it. I used to make my own tools a lot more often, but as you said, a lot of time goes into the replicated effort thing. One also has to maintain it. In-house tools are big time sinks and it is not unusual to have to implement something new after months/years without touching it.
110
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 20/08/2026
Not saying Godot will ever enshittify, but nowadays you never know. Who knows if new leadership will come tomorrow that will turn things upside down? I guess I'm just trying to say that while we have no choice but to rely on 3rd-party tools, we should at least try to lessen our dependency on them.
010
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 20/08/2026
For instance, if I were to use Godot (which is a great project, certainly among the best stuff we have currently available), I'd use it with a mainstream lang like C++ or C#. Imagine having 10 years of accumulated GDScript codebase and suddenly having to switch engine.
220
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 20/08/2026
Yes. I'm actually more of a multimedia library guy (pygame-ce/SDL, Panda3D). I'm just saying that we should strive to make code and stuff that's not entirely dependent on a single tool. For instance, much of my codebase can be reused across different libs/engines.
220
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 20/08/2026
No, not all of us should make engines. As I said, small scale stuff that can be done. For instance, I'm not particularly smart, but managed to make a generalist Python node editor (Nodezator). People or small teams can make focused reliable tools.
110
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 20/08/2026
In that sense, free and open-source software is more important than ever. It at least give us options, even if it takes years to get where we need. E.g.: Had I not adopted linux 10 years ago, I'd be suffering from the effects of this wave of bloated software, telemetry and slop even more.
020
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 20/08/2026
I don't have a solution either. Only thing I'll say is that if we have to learn something from all of this, it is that, as best as we can, we must roll our sleeves up and create our own solutions, even if in way smaller scale.
220
Kennedy (open-source maintainer) @kennedyrichard.com · 20/08/2026
Yep. 3D design tools are very complex systems that take a lot of time to build and require a lot of different high-level skills and knowledge. It is no wonder we relied on the few available to us for so long instead of spinning alternatives.
