The Apollo LES was similar; if a circuit connected to the Saturn V rocket was cut it would activate the rockets to carry the crew capsule away from an exploding launch stack. The Soyuz escape system required an actual command to be sent, preventing accidental activation at the expense of safety.

I think you're correct for now, but the whole industry is banking on reaching AGI within a few years at most, and when that happens they see a recursive improvement loop with impossible-to-predict consequences. This technology can't be both as powerful as they say it will become and totally safe.

And now, while he thought he could just declare victory regardless of the conditions and his base would believe it, the Iranians are making him have to show some backbone to get the Israelis to back off in Lebanon. This is what happens when you and your "greatest allies" aren't on the same page.

"This is a supply-side jobs number, which means you can have growth and low inflation" Good thing they haven't done anything else which might cause broad-based inflation throughout the entire economy.

Ha I remember reading this when I was a kid too. So much stuff about Watterson's struggle for artistic expression against the format limitations the syndicate demanded and the really deep influences he had. Great book.

User: But it's not January 3, 2034. Copilot: You're absolutely right. I've checked again (paying extra attention to the details this time) and the correct date is October 10, 1942. Would you like to know what date that is in the Persian calendar?

Recent talk of an off ramp is because Trump told some aides he would be ok ending this without reopening Hormuz in a transparent bid to try to get the Europeans to come clean up his mess, which won't work.

I love how we live in a country where we get to guess how many of our soldiers are about to die based on the cryptic riddles spouted off by a maniacal geriatric, then the news of those deaths is communicated to us in rhyme form by an illiterate drunk.

This president is speed running us into a multi-year, multi trillion dollar regime change war and occupation of Iran that will make Iraq look tiny by comparison, probably accompanied by a worldwide depression, so yeah, I'd rather he somehow come out of this looking good than let that happen.

It's not a matter of Iran overplaying their hand; we attacked them in the middle of negotiations, backed them into a fight to the death, and the Israelis have been assassinating anyone we could negotiate a ceasefire with. Only Trump was stupid enough to believe this would turn out like Venezuela.

We're hitting 1,000 targets a day. If the measure of success in a war is how many bombs you've dropped (and surely there can be no other way of quantifying winning), I'd say we're winning. Just like we won in Vietnam by dropping more bombs than were dropped in all of WW2 combined.

You see, when Americans say stuff like this it's just for effect, not meant to be taken literally. When our enemies do it it's because they're evil people who need to be killed extrajudicially. www.yahoo.com/news/article...
