These changes to lipid-lipid and lipid-protein interactions likely contribute to age-related myelin deficits and may help explain cognitive decline as we age. A huge thank you to @naguibmechawar.bsky.social and to our wonderful Bluesky-less co-authors 😊 🧵 4/4

In contrast, we found pronounced age-related shifts in phospholipid composition. The overall pattern showed ⬆️ MUFAs and ⬇️ long-chain omega-6 PUFAs with age. We also observed decreased expression of myelin-constituent genes and proteins with age, correlating with the lipid quantities. 🧵 3/4

Interestingly, we did not identify robust molecular correlates of the long-lasting impacts of early life adversity, as we had previously seen in the anterior cingulate cortex, suggesting regional specificity to these effects. 🧵 2/4

🧠 New paper out in @jneurochem.bsky.social! In this study, we profile key myelin-constituent lipids and proteins in the human uncinate fasciculus — a white matter tract linked to aging and trauma-related vulnerability to psychopathology 📄 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... 🧵 1/4

A Comprehensive Characterization of the Phospholipid and Cholesterol Composition of the Uncinate Fasciculus in the Human Brain: Evidence of Age‐Related Alterations
The uncinate fasciculus (UF), which serves to connect the anterior temporal lobe and the orbitofrontal cortex, is a highly understudied white matter fiber bundle. In this study, we characterized the ...
