We understand the importance of looking sexy and intriguing while reading a book on your commute or at the coffee shop which is why we made it bright yellow (aka the Anton Jager effect). Copies shipping now (or already en route, if you already ordered one) xx

Anna and I are mayyyybe starting to resurrect our dormant Untitled Presentation project (a weekly slide journal we started in 2018) and I was skimming some old slides. So much I'd already forgotten about the covid era, (eg from Dec 2021): docs.google.com/presentation...
Screenshot of a chaotically formatted slide. An image of a hand with the thumb and forefinger stretched out as though grasping something or showing a size of about 3 inches. Above the image, pink text reads "Thinking about how the universal (?) bartender/door person hand signal for “can I see your ID” now means “can I see your vax card (...and ID to verify it)” Sometimes instead of one hand you get a 2 handed gesture to indicate the 2 cards, or a double-emphasized single hand gesture (this AND that card)..."

The funniest thing about the Odyssey that no one is talking about is that Odysseus's soldier bros spend most of their time doing a lazy cop tactical pose with their hands hanging off the neckline of their armor like this.
Stock photo / AI generated photo (?) of a cop guy wearing a bunch of tactical gear and grabbing onto the neckline of his vest with both hands, elbows hanging, in a kind of "cop at rest" pose.

Unbelievable how dull and hackneyed the AI "taste" conversation is. As though the literary critics hadn't been hashing this shit out for literal centuries!!! "taste, steadily more inured to old stimuli, will constantly ask for more stimuli, ever stronger and more violent" — Schlegel, 1797 💅
From On The Study of Greek Poetry (1797), Friedrich Schlegel:

“The dominion of the interesting can only destroy itself and is therefore a transitory crisis of taste. But the two possible catastrophes facing it are very different: whereas art is prevalently oriented towards aesthetic energy, taste, steadily more inured to old stimuli, will constantly ask for more stimuli, ever stronger and more violent: it will waste no time in passing from the piquant to the amazing. The piquant is that which convulsively excites numbed sensibilities, while the amazing is a stimulus and a goad for the imagination. Both are harbingers of imminent death. The vapid is the miserly nourishment of impotent taste, while that which produces a shock within the bosom of the public (in its eccentric, repugnant, and horrible modes) is the final convulsion of taste in its death throes (…)

Beauty is so far from being the dominant principle of modern poetry that many of the most splendid modern works are clearly portrayals of ugliness, so much so that one is obliged to admit (unwillingly) that there exists an immense richness of reality at the peak of its disorder and there is a desperation caused by the excess of energies and the conflict between them whose portrayal requires an equal, if not a greater creative power and artistic wisdom than that which is required for the portrayal of that richness and those energies when they are in perfect harmony. (…) The public, even the most cultivated, wholly indifferent to form and exclusively athirst for content, asks only that the artists provide interesting individuality. As long as it produces an effect and that this effect is strong and new, the public is indifferent to the ways an materials that bring this about, precisely because that same public is indifferent to the harmony of the single effects in a completed whole.”

Blessed to get a ride to the airport in my friend’s Nissan Cube, which I was thrilled to find has this deranged ripple effect on the ceiling radiating out from the cab light. What a vehicle!!
Looking from the back seat to the ceiling of a car and out the front windshield. The ceiling has a strange rippled effect. It is early morning near dawn, a corner store is visible out the front windshield, and a plush toy hangs from the rear view mirror.

Question for the chat that I am 100% sure chatgpt could answer instantly but i'll receive more social satisfaction from crowdsourcing, and it's killing me that I can't remember, help:
I'm trying and failing to think of the name of a band from the early 2010s (I think). I thought they were british but may have been american. They were kind of post-punk and hardcore influenced, and maybe a bit post-electroclash. They were very political but quite stern about it, including having text on their record cover about their politics. But I think they didn't talk about it during their sets, only in their music. And they wanted audiences to not be on their phones maybe?? I think the album cover I remember was black and white, with mostly close up images of the bands faces. I think there were men and women in the band. 3 or 4 members. Any ideas?

This (from Stewart Brand on the progress of his now-published book about Maintenance) is gagging me ... essentially a rewrite of Mierle Ladreman Ukeles' Maintenance Art manifesto. "Maintenance is a drag; it takes all the fucking time" (M.L.U 1969) queensmuseum.org/wp-content/u...
MAINTENANCE is what keeps everything going. It’s what keeps life going.

Every living thing spends a great deal of time and toil in maintaining its own life and the life of the systems it depends on. Plants tend the life of the soil they grow in. Beavers maintain their dams and thereby the pond that protects them. Humans maintain their bodies, their vehicles, their homes, and their cities, along with much else. Nearly everything worth maintaining is nested in something larger even more worth maintaining.

But so much of doing maintenance is tiresome. Brush the damn teeth, change the damn oil. They are unrewarding chores—repetitive, boring, often frustrating, and endless. Since that part of maintenance is a pain, we shirk it, defer it, fail to budget time or money for it, let it drop to the bottom of the priority list. That’s easy to do because the necessity of maintenance accumulates invisibly and gradually. Then suddenly one day the thing breaks, the system falters, and everything stops in a turmoil of disruption, expense, and blame.

The apparent paradox is profound: Maintenance is absolutely necessary and maintenance is optional. It it easy to put off, and yet it has to be done. Defer now, regret later.

Alan Sekula, on the advent of aerial photography. The FPV drone brings all three "mediums of destruction" (photography, flight, bombardment) together in one efficient long-range unit. From: www.artforum.com/features/the...
THE FIRST WORLD War was the first occasion for the intensive use of aerial photography for “intelligence” purposes. The previous half-century had yielded combinations of balloons and draftsmen, balloons and cameras, rockets and cameras, and, absurdly enough, pigeons and cameras. With airplane photography, however, two globalizing mediums, one of transportation and the other of communication, were united in the increasingly rationalized practice of warfare. (I use “globalizing” not in the affirmative, communal sense of McLuhan and Fuller, but in the sense of hegemony. While the airplane lent itself to material penetration and control, the camera served mainly in a cultural and ideological campaign. Godard’s Les Carabiniers points well to this communion of the dive-bomber and the postcard.) A third medium of destruction, long-range artillery, was quickly added to this instrumental collage, making bombardment, as well as image recording, possible at a great distance.

I pretty much think the semi-apocryphal Truffaut truism that "it is impossible to make an anti-war film" is correct when it comes to hollywood narrative cinema. However, it is 100% possible to make an anti-war experimental film. Time to tap back in at the cinephile factory, friends.

And he keeps it real to this day (from diyconspiracy.net/jyoti-mishra...)
I’m very selective on gigs as I won’t want to end up in front of a crowd of people who just want to hear “Your Woman” fifteen times.

Also, I will not work with Tories, I much prefer gigging for co-ops / anarchists / communists and I want shows to be all ages with good accessibility for everyone. As you may expect, this kind of narrows down the gigs I do, as I turn around 90% down. My ideal tour would be me and my MPC and guitar just doing a load of gigs in small rooms to maybe thirty or forty people. I have zero desire to do the large rock band thing of squinting out from a high stage at a bunch of people you can’t see.

"Don’t Be a Panican. We’re Winning — and We’re Not Slowing Down.
The White House, February 9, 2026
Under President Donald J. Trump’s leadership, this Administration is smashing through the chaos and destruction left by Democrats and unleashing the most aggressive pursuit of the America First agenda in history. While the Fake News and Radical Left collude to distract, depress, and divide, they’re simply lying to mask the undeniable truth: America is safer, stronger, richer, and more secure than at any point in decades.

Don’t take the bait. New victories pour in daily as President Trump delivers on his promises and rebuilds the foundation for long-term success in the greatest nation on Earth.

Here are a few things to celebrate from just the past few days"

Startup guys once again validating my theory of combinatory slop and cultural stagnation!!
Combinatory slop and cultural stagnation

Taco Bell theory: at Taco Bell there are about 10 key components on offer, and everything is a combination of those components. Ground beef sour cream lettuce grated cheese hard tortilla soft tortilla etc. Most of the “innovation” at play comes from combining the components in a new way. Crunch wrap supreme, etc.

Occasionally a new component enters the picture — Dorito cheesy dust, Flamin Hot spicy dust — but mostly these new elements are existing branded components ported in from other popular junk food brand, and often available for a limited time. Kind of like a crossover ep in the marvel cinematic universe.

This combinatory logic is widespread. You can see it at play in many spheres. Fast casual food concepts. Superhero movies. Trope-centric genre fiction.

It is often perceived as freedom.

The Starbucks drink, where the customer can have anything they can imagine that can be created from the list of components.

It is specifically American. The salad with protein in a plastic clamshell. It reveals a kind of cultural stagnation.

Taco Bell logic does not enable truly new things to be produced. But it does enable an almost-endless or seemingly-endless set of combinations to be constructed within a certain container (a mass-market paperback, a plastic clamshell, a 20oz drink cup, a streaming platform).

Generative AI image slop can be considered a new iteration of this combinatory logic, automating the creation of new combinations and further removing any creativity or agency.

Ultimately stagnant, produced from recombined input components, perceived as limitless and creative, favoring consumer choice over artistic integrity, trending towards conservatism.

Funny to me how much juice and staying power the idea of "slop" has had (ie just read the new max read on slop maxread.substack.com/p/what-is-sl...). Slop is a useful concept, I guess! Anyway I made another brief note on some of my thoughts on slop, stagnation, and taco bell
