Book 29 of 2026 The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion Vol. 1 by Beth Brower 4/5 I was kicking myself when two of my library holds came in yesterday because I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get through them both in 3 weeks. Ha! This took an hour. Just a frivolous little delight.

Book 28 of 2026 The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett 4.5/5 This book was great fun and just what I needed after a couple of heavier books. A mix of fantasy and mystery, I sped through it in a few days. I’m definitely going to continue the series. #booksky

Book 27 of 2026 My Phantoms by Gwendoline Riley 4/5 Don’t let the title or cover fool you. This is not a spooky season book. It is, as George Costanza so famously put it, about nothing.

Book 26 of 2026 Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart 4.5/5 How many times is Douglas Stuart going to shatter my heart?? I guess however many books he ends up writing. Another bleak but beautiful slice of Scottish life full of struggles with poverty, addiction, and sexuality. #booksky

Book 25 of 2026 Meet Me In The Garden by Nina LaCour 4.5/5 This was a tender, beautifully written book that spanned New Orleans to LA from the 40s to the 60s. It's about race and sexuality and family, both genetic and found. I really enjoyed it. #booksky

Book 23 of 2026 Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir 4.5/5 This was every bit as funny and heartwarming and engrossing as I’d heard it was. It took me a little while to accept the slightly self-satisfied humor and tone of the first third of the book but then I surrendered to it.

Book 22 of 2026 Whistler by Ann Patchett 4.75/5 This book lived up to the hype for me. It’s exactly the kind of book I love. Just a deep dive into the relationships between very real seeming people with all of their flaws and magnificences on display. Beautifully done.

Book 21 of 2026 Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett 4.25/5 I have been wanting to get into the Discworld for decades but I was always overwhelmed by choosing where to start. I finally decided to bite the bullet and start with the first City Watch novel and I’m very happy that I did.

Book 20 of 2026 John of John by Douglas Stuart 4.25/5 One thing Douglas Stuart is going to do is break your heart and this book is no exception. But there was also room for hope in this one and I clung to it like a life preserver.

Book 19 of 2026 The Feast by Margaret Kennedy 4.25/5 This book was published in 1949 but it felt very modern. It’s EXTREMELY English in its humor and drama. The cast of characters are based on the seven deadly sins (plus a bunch of lovely counterparts) and it was really clever and witty. #booksky

Book 18 of 2026 Mornings In Jenin by Susan Abulhawa 4.75/5 Hoo boy this is powerful stuff. This book focuses on a family in Palestine starting in the 1940s as background but mostly following one girl/woman from the 60s to early 00s. It’s brutal and heartbreaking and eye-opening and infuriating.

Book 17 of 2026 The Tapestry of Fate by Shannon Chakraborty 4.25/5 This is book 2 in the Amina Al-Sarifi series and I think I enjoyed it even more than the first. Fun palace intrigue fantasy set in the Middle East for something a little different. I’ll definitely read book 3 when it comes out.

Book 16 of 2026 Carl's Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman 4.25/5 Book 2 of the DCC series was much more plot focused than the first so I didn't feel as connected to the characters. But it was still great fun to read and I'm looking forward to continuing the story. #booksky

Book 15 of 2026 Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver 4.5/5 I finally read this smash-hit-for-good-reason book! It’s a modern day retelling of David Copperfield (my dad was named for him because his mother read it while pregnant!) set during the early opioid crisis in Appalachia.

Book 13 of 2026 The Burning Side by Sarah Damoff 4/5 This book has very good reviews on StoryGraph (4.5+) and I don’t really get it. It was fine. I mostly enjoyed it. I hated some of it. I did feel emotions. I’m not mad it was my BOTM pick but it’s not one I’ll be pushing anyone else to read.

Book 12 of 2026 Lady Tremaine by Rachel Hochhauser 4.5/5 This is a retelling of Cinderella from the perspective of the stepmother. I thought it was going to be just a bit of fun but it actually went quite deep on the struggles of a single mother.

Book 11 of 2026 Burn Down Master’s House 3.5/5 This was one of my most highly anticipated reads but I was really let down by the writing. Story concept was 5/5. It was almost like loosely connected short stories about enslaved people enacting vengeance (I would say justice) on their slaveholders.

Book 8 of 2026 Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg 4.75/5 This is a semi-autobiographical work of fiction that really touched my heart. Leslie was a gender fluid butch lesbian who came of age in the 60s and the main character mirrors many of her lived experiences.

Book 7 of 2026 Kin by Tayari Jones 4.25/5 Lots of buzz for this one and it almost lives up to the hype. I would have loved a deeper insight into how these two cradle friends ended up on such divergent paths because I truly loved and cared about both main characters.

Book 6 of 2026 The Reformatory by Tananarive Due 4.75/5 This book has been at the top of my TBR for a while but I kept putting it off because of the “horror” tag. Silly me. I should have known the true horror would be an accurate representation of the Jim Crow South, not the ghosts.

Book 5 of 2026 The Future Saints by Ashley Winstead 3.75/5 I think I’m officially in my old hag era because I get annoyed reading about twentysomethings! I’m vowing to do a little more research when selecting books, especially from BOTM which often skews younger. #booksky

Book 4 of 2026 The Will of the Many by James Islington 4.25/5 This book read as New Adult to me. It was engaging and well planned and plotted but it wasn’t challenging in any way. The ending had an enticing enough lure that I will definitely read the next book. #booksky

Book 3 of 2026 It’s Not Her by Mary Kubica 3.75/5 This was the palate cleanser I needed after Tom’s Crossing. It was fast and shallow but kept me engaged. I struggled when characters acted in ways that didn’t strike me as believable but it’s almost unavoidable in a thriller.

Book 2 of 2026 Tom’s Crossing by Mark Z. Danielewski 4.5/5 I can’t really describe this book in any coherent way. It’s 1200+ pages and densely packed at that. It was often stressful to read but also frequently veered into almost incomprehensible tangents. I would die for the main characters.
