I went to the DSA’s summit in Chicago, where democratic socialists celebrated their wins and debated their place in (or out) of the Democratic Party. Democrats fear the socialist label, but DSA was confident its ideas would resonate even in purple states. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/03/u...

Scoop: Dem legislators in Montana wrote to Seth Bodnar & Alani Bankhead today, urging them to meet and for one to drop out of #MTSen by Aug -- to avoid helping GOP by splitting vote. Bodnar says he wants to have a meeting. Bankhead says no meeting unless Bodnar is considering dropping out.

Went to Wisconsin to write about Francesca Hong, the democratic socialist candidate for governor. She argues her populist message can appeal even to Trump supporters — and I watched her try to sway a few. Her success would mean socialism is viable in swing states. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/03/u...

A Big Gamble for the Left: Can Socialism Appeal in a Swing State?
Francesca Hong, a state legislator running for governor of Wisconsin, wants to prove that a democratic socialist can win in a battleground. Some say she would hand the race to Republicans.

Some thought Alani Bankhead, the Dem Senate nominee in Montana, would drop out at her press conference today and endorse Seth Bodnar, an independent. Instead, she attacked Bodnar. “I am never dropping out," she said. "Ever." The 3-way race favors Republicans. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/15/u...

LaVine is such an albatross that there’s no way we can get rid of him. DeRozan I think could help a team that needs scoring and he’s only partially guaranteed, I think we could dump him

Politicians are swearing like sailors these days. We analyzed 6 years of posts and found the top offenders — mostly Democrats, who say it's an expression of anger over Trump. "I’m a pretty nice guy, but I swear and I say fuck a lot," Rep Robert Garcia said. Story: www.nytimes.com/2026/04/09/u...

Horrific Kings win vs the Nets when we absolutely need to tank. Playing Monk and DeRozan in the clutch. Fouling up 3 to guarantee win. Kings announcers spouting anti-tanking propaganda about avoiding a “losing culture” (little late for that!) Terrible organization top to bottom.

Part of Kat Abughazaleh’s concession speech here in #IL09, where she called out the AIPAC-tied super PAC spending in her race. “We had millions in AIPAC spending, dark money smear campaigns, institutional power tipping the scales, and we made them use their entire arsenal.”

Maybe because this is a story about the situation in rural Northern California? It’s not a feature about the gerrymanders elsewhere…though those are certainly relevant in the broader redistricting battle, hence their mention. Hope you enjoyed the photos!

I’m sorry, I just don’t agree. There is certainly a pro-socialist sentiment, as evidenced by the city council members being elected! There’s backlash to them. The conflict is playing out as Portland has big problems, some depicted in photos. I don’t think it’s hard to grasp both of those things.

I don’t agree. Nowhere in this story do we argue the socialists are responsible for Portland’s problems, as people here seem to be suggesting.

Kellen Browning @kellen.bsky.social · 04/10/2025
Well it is certainly intended to be Mamdani-themed. But why does that automatically make it sandbagging?

Kellen Browning @kellen.bsky.social · 04/10/2025
I didn’t “steal” their story. I got the idea from their great story, and went out and reported my own piece that led to my conclusions. I also did credit them and link to them several times in the story, so now you’re just making things up. Sounds like something a disingenuous worm would do!
100
Kellen Browning @kellen.bsky.social · 04/10/2025
I think we make it clear that those things predate the socialists, and instead they make up the bulk of the debate now between the socialists and the moderates. But I take it you disagree.

Not really. Now we are just splitting hairs.
500
Kellen Browning @kellen.bsky.social · 04/10/2025
No, it’s that I think you’re wrong. I don’t think this paints a scary picture of the city. It doesn’t depict Portland as a war zone. It’s not designed to get anyone to vote one way or another. What it does do is be honest that the city still has big problems, that both sides are grappling with.

Right. The county has played a big role in keeping the pre-K program, despite the governor’s efforts. I understand people feel it’s overstated, but: “Although moderates are spooked by their talk of higher taxes and social housing … the socialists have not yet tried to muscle through such policies.”
