"In separate sewer areas, this pollution is carried by stormwater and discharged directly into local waterways. This can have a negative impact on water quality and recreational uses."

"As a result, wildlife disappeared, waterborne diseases spread, and communities of people moved away from the water’s edge. New York City officials responded with investments in the first wastewater resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) at Coney Island (1886), 26th Ward (1894), and Jamaica (1903)."

"Over a century and a half of industrial pollution and sewage degraded the once- flourishing environment. These water quality and ecosystem degradations were exacerbated by the physical alterations to many waterways surrounding NYC and the legacy industrial pollution."

After multiple days of being outside at parks in the heat, I am cold indoors, and so thrilled for a freshly made cup of coffee made by Maria, park’s employee for 45 years. Sad that even here staff have a hard time with recycling (there doesn’t seem like there is any composting in the dining space)

COMBINED SEWER SYSTEM IN DRY AND WET WEATHER CONDITIONS climate.cityofnewyork.us/wp-content/u... #SCIE8703N
A typical combined sewer system collects stormwater runoff, domestic sewage, and wastewater. The system then transports collected flows into a wastewater resource recovery facility. During heavy rainstorms, combined sewers receive higher than normal flows. Recovery facilities are unable to
handle flows that are more than twice the design capacity. This may result in a combined sewer overflow (CSO), or a mix of stormwater and untreated sewage that discharges directly into the city’s waterways.

Today I Learned: NYC buildings have a "dead load" capacity. Each green roof is built to handle a certain amount of water. Beyond the capacity, it HAS to drain. Otherwise it will take the soil. Dead loads also involve snow on the roof.
