Quote from The End Times of Markusz Zielinski by Keith Stevenson - “What the hell,” Elly said.
Markusz agreed. But he was staring at the annulus field and
wishing he had real time data on this. Twice now, Teel and Rachik
had produced an annulus effect he hadn’t foreseen. Admittedly, both
times with catastrophic results. From an experimental perspective,
it was intriguing and possibly quite promising. From a real-world
perspective it was fucking terrifying. After what happened to Paradis
how could they keep tinkering like this?
“They weren’t entirely unforeseen,” Helena said.
She was back. Markusz felt ridiculously happy about that. It
probably indicated he was succumbing to some deepening mental
psychosis, but what the hell.
“Not unf–” he began. Then the augment window collapsed
around him and he saw her standing at the workstation behind the
still seated Elly.
Helena smiled. “Nice set-up,” she said.
He smiled back. “Well, you know. But … not unforeseen?”
Elly stood. “Christ, is your dead wife back?”

Mini-review - Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan - 5 stars. The OG cyberpunk detective story, but so much more. Morgan's storytelling, world building and technological/ social extrapolation make this one of the most fascinating pieces of SF from the early 2000s.

Cage is amazing, channeling Edward G Robinson and Bogart in episode 2 alone, with a script that sizzles with noirish one-liners.

Mini-review - Shroud by Adrian Tchaikovsky - 5 stars. Shroud is in equal parts a fascinating meditation on the nature of emergent consciousness, and a gruelling survival tale set in the most inhospitable of planetary environments, all told with Tchaikovsky's signature eit and intellectual rigour.

I'm currently worldbuilding, so I'm consulting the master: Iain M Banks in his book The Culture: The Drawings. This page is amazing, noting that in worldbuilding, 'nothing is so obvious that you might not have to explain it to somebody sometime' but 1/2 #ScienceFiction

Kelan Teel 9/9
Played by Rhys Ifans
A mediocre scientist – if you listen to Markusz – but at heart and according to Helena (who knows him best of all) – a political animal with all the survival instincts of a rat. Teel has been chief scientist of the CSTO Task Force on the Effect for the last eighteen years (mainly because no-one else wanted a job that seemed doomed to failure), but like any rat, he’s determined to carve out a niche to survive in, no matter where he ends up, and screw anyone else.
000
Keith Stevenson @keithstevenson.com · 14/02/2026
Marthe Firmin 8/9
Played by Clare Perkins
Mayor of the planet Garia, Firmin has seen her entire society sidelined by the initiation of the Redout Project and her people’s culture and public spaces knocked down and reshaped by an overwhelming torrent of incomers. She’s angry and resentful, but she’s biding her time. There is a disaster coming and her all-consuming focus is in making sure her people, above all the others languishing on Redout, are safest of all.
100
Keith Stevenson @keithstevenson.com · 14/02/2026
Elly Capalian 7/9
Played by India Amerteifio
When she was just nine years old, Elly’s parents were killed while peacefully protesting the destruction of significant historical Garian sites as part of the Redout Project redevelopment. She’s tried not to let hatred of incomers overwhelm her, but as a member of the Garian Separatists she’s killed more than a few of them.
100
Keith Stevenson @keithstevenson.com · 14/02/2026
Hugo Denantes 6/9
Played by Paul Giamatti
If Fontaneau is a threat hidden in plain sight, Denantes is just an obvious threat. Youngest son of the Great Paradisan Family of Denantes, he’s lucky to have escaped being disowned, his peccadillos and excesses are so disgusting. Instead, he’s been sent to represent the family business, Fabrika SA, as part of the Redout Project. This is probably a bad thing for everyone involved (and whatever remains of humanity).
100
Keith Stevenson @keithstevenson.com · 14/02/2026
Ernest Fontaneau 5/9
Played by John Noble
Patri of one of the oldest Great Paradisan Families, Fontaneau is a dangerous sociopath. Our same casual observer who had such a negative opinion of Markusz, would be completely drawn in by Fontaneau’s apparent affable and warm demeanour. But our observer would be a fool – and in some degree of danger having let his guard down around this man. Fontaneau wouldn’t know a genuine emotion if it bit him. He is cold, calculating and more than a little dead inside. Everything he does is for the furtherance of himself alone and if you happen to be in the way, well… it’s been nice knowing you.
100
Keith Stevenson @keithstevenson.com · 14/02/2026
Sylfe Cachand 4/9
Played by Clemence Poesy
Sylfe, like her younger sister Yvette, was born through parthenogenesis. Her mother told her at an early age to, ‘respect herself and not be boring’. She’s determined not to be the stereotypical head of a Paradisan company (she heads up SolEng SA, which specialises in stellar engineering for M-Worlds), or a stereotypical anything for that matter. She has a deep understanding of stellar physics, a keen head for business and anyone who crosses her will live to regret it. But other than that, anything goes. The average and normal bores her – in herself as much as in others.
110
Keith Stevenson @keithstevenson.com · 14/02/2026
Helena Murchadh 3/9
Played by Tuppence Middleton
A brilliant applied mathematician, physicist and engineer, Helena rose quicky through the ranks of the M-Worlds Cooperative Sciences and Technology Organisation to become Chief Engineer for the CSTO Task Force on the Effect. Noted for her significant work in identifying the anisotropic nexus of Effect events, she also works closely with Markusz Zielinski, who she fell in love with, despite his ability to annoy the hell out of everyone else on the Task Force. She was the only one to see his potential and it was their collaboration which laid the foundations for the annulus.
100
Keith Stevenson @keithstevenson.com · 14/02/2026
Markusz Zielinski 2/9
Played by Tom Hiddleston
A casual observer would opine that Markusz thinks a lot of himself. It’s an observation Markusz would agree with while pointing out that such high self-regard is entirely justified as he is not only a proven (and verified) mathematical genius but was instrumental in developing the only known method of saving the universe. The same observer would also note that Markusz loves his wife Helena deeply. Markusz would again agree. She makes him a better person.
