What an end to the trip. From Norwick to Norwich we go. Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler in the shadow of the famous Valyie garden on Unst this afternoon. Great views of this much wanted lifer. Crap record shot below. Hawfinch and Barred Warbler also nice supporting cast.

Forecasted favourable-ish conditions at Bridges of Ross today did not materialise in seabird passage. After early rain, a Wilson's Petrel @ 0934 (M.Hoit) gave us hope, but the sun came out & passage was minimal until a BAROLO in close Manx @ 1806 - my 4th here & 2nd self-found. Magic. #IrishBirding

A lovely surprise in this morning's #Norwich garden moth trap. My second Dark-crimson Underwing (Catocala sponsa) (after one in July '22). Formerly a very rare migrant to #Norfolk, now likely breeding in small numbers. #norfolkmoths #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky

The final new species recorded in my #Norwich garden in June was this Coptotriche marginea (Bramble Blotch-miner) #589. Two new species in July so far have both been a little more impressive to behold! Kent Black Arches #590 & Jersey Tiger #591. #norfolkmoths #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
Coptotriche marginea (Bramble Blotch-miner). Species #589 recorded from my Norwich garden. 30/06/2026 Kent Black Arches (Meganola albula). Formerly a "Nationally Scarce" species, now increasingly common. Species #590 for my #Norwich garden. 04/07/2026Jersey Tiger (Euplagia quadripunctaria) new for my Norwich garden on 08/07/2026, species #591. Formerly scarce, restricted to the Channel Islands & a couple of south coast colonies - this is an increasingly common species rapidly on the move north through the country. First recorded in Norfolk in 2013, and first in VC27 in 2017 - this is a species I've been expecting.

Phtheochroa sodaliana (Pied Buckthorn Beauty). If it wasn't for the Oecophora bractella I think this may have taken 1st place in the best looking competition. Categorised as Nationally Scarce B (recorded in 16-30 hectads) and scarce in Norfolk too, mostly seen in the Brecks & Broads.Aethes cnicana (Thistle Straw)Epinotia cruciana (Willow Tortrix)Monochroa palustrellus (Dock Streak). 5/13: Trapping in the #Norfolk #Broads with Mick A'Court. New species for me keep coming! Here are Dotted Footman, Ghost Moth, Dotted Fan-foot & Water Ermine. #norfolkmoths #mothsmatter #teammoth #bugsky
Dotted Footman (Pelosia muscerda)

This species is classified as Nationally Rare (meaning it is only recorded in 15 or fewer hectads). It is pretty much restricted (nationally) to the Norfolk Broads. We caught several across the 5 traps that we set. Ghost Moth (Hepialus humuli)

This is a gorgeous female, the male being mostly white. Not a rare species, but it is classified as a BAP Declining species. I'm a little surprised I've never bumped into them before - especially the males that lek at dusk over grassy areas. Worth the wait.Dotted Fan-foot (Macrochilo cribrumalis)

A species on the rise, getting fairly common. This used to be a scarce species (formally classified as Nationally Scarce B). Still a new one for me.Water Ermine (Spilosoma urticae)

Classified as Nationally Scarce but not uncommon in the Broads.

4/13: Trapping in the #Norfolk #Broads with Mick A'Court. Next up new species for me were Lempke's Gold Spot & Grey Arches. See ALT for more details. #norfolkmoths #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
Lempke's Gold Spot (Plusia putnami)

This species is very similar to Gold Spot (Plusia festucae) but generally prefers damper, wetter areas. Consequently in Norfolk it is very much a Broadland species. Due to similarity with Gold Spot, photographs are required away from this area when submitting records. All of the individuals we encountered were ascribed as Lempke's, the pictures in this post are of three different individuals.

Further information on separation from Gold Spot can be found here:
