It still saddens me that DC never collected the Superman Annuals in their hardcover Library.

I still find it amazing that the dusty old unlamented Comics Code Authority actually put an artist's *style* on their banned items.

Hey Kelly, did you catch this tribute in the new Legion of Super-Heroes #1? @kellythompson.bsky.social

A masked Garth Ranzz, in costume and mask as Lightning Lad, is on the floor after tumbling through a window into his room. His cape is awkwardly over party of his head. Under his hand is a copy of the 300th issue of Absolute Wonder Woman.

From off panel comes the voice of his twin sister, Ayla: "I sincerely HOPE this is some weird ROLE-PLAYING thing with your friends..."

And here's her "first appearance" from Howard the Duck 16, 1977. 😉

Howard, on the half of the double-page spread by Tom Palmer, is on a crowded city street looking back toward the right half. There an African-American showgirl and her pet Patrick are fighting a small anthropomorphic lamp. Only these 4 figures are in color, the rest is in shades of blue/purple.

Below Howard is the following text:

III. Obligatory comic book fight scene

There is one rule of comic book writing which simply cannot be violated, even by a writer in search of something as impalpable as his soul or Las Vegas.

Being a visual medium comics theoretically requires at least a modicum of action to engage and sustain reader interest.

Thus, in the interest of sustain your interest, we reluctantly present this BRAIN-BLASTING BATTLE SCENE, pitting an ostrich and a Las Vega chorus girls against the MIND-NUMBING MEANCE of a KILLER lampshade in a DUEL TO THE DEATH!!

Since we only get one picture for this CLASH OF TITANS, though, we’ll have to tell you the outcome. The ostrich sticks its head in a manhole, shrugging off all that’s happened and returning to his secret identity as a roadblock. The chorus girl finds herself in the thrill of battle, becomes one with her headers, and is elevated to goddess hood. The lampshade dies. Basically, it’s like every other comic mag.

It's not just me, right? We all want My Adventures with Superman to have a 4th season and an ongoing comic?

In one of his favorite roles, Louis Gossett Jr played the alien Drac, Jeriba Shigan, in Wolfgang Petersen's 1985 adaptation of Barry Longyear's Enemy Mine. Brilliant performance of alien speech and mannerisms. I got to tell him he deserved an Oscar for it, but being SF probably wasn't mentioned.

Oh my. Received today was Zorro: Remastered Edition from @alienbooks.bsky.social, featuring all of the Alex Toth stories from Gold Key comics in the mid-'60s. It's truly beautiful, not all detail is present in these pictures from the Kickstarter campaign. It's a volume to peruse many times over.

If I counted correctly, we have 9 more volumes of Lone Wolf & Cub Deluxe Edition (in English) to go. The book has a really nice design, let's hope it remains uniform for the next 3? 4? years. (It should be okay; afaik Dark Horse has been good about their books.)
