Do you have anyone giving you feedback?

The contrast between the large political scale and the more personal character conflicts sounds like one of the story’s biggest strengths. I’d be curious to know how readers respond to the amount of world-building in Chapter 1, whether it feels immersive right away or takes some time to settle in.

Three chapters in one day is solid progress. How are you feeling about the changes so far, do you feel like the story is flowing better?

Do you currently have anyone giving you feedback on your writing, or are you mostly working through it on your own?

In that case, I’d focus on the reader experience rather than suggesting changes, what works, what stands out, what feels unclear, and how the piece comes across overall. I’d be happy to give you that kind of feedback if you’re interested.

If you’re ready whenever you have a project, you can send it to my Gmail. It’s easier for me to organize the manuscript and give you detailed feedback that way. Just DM me when you’re ready, and I’ll send you the email address.

I really liked the exchange between Dee and Kyle. Dee feels so natural here, and I like how Kyle immediately gets defensive when she calls him out. I’d just love to see a little more of his reaction, especially if her words actually get under his skin. Do you have anyone giving you feedback?

The imagery here creates a tense, grim atmosphere, especially “the last sleep.” I’d take another look at the action and dialogue, though, the sequence around the guard, comb, and “Do it” is a little difficult to follow on the first read. Clarifying those beats could make the final shot hit harder.

I really enjoy this kind of developmental feedback, so if you ever want a more in-depth beta read for this or another project, I’d be happy to help through my beta reader service, it costs a little fee.

I’m really glad the feedback helped. The clarification about the visions makes sense, and I’m glad the Rosalina analysis connected with what you intended. I’d definitely give the pacing and Dylan’s reaction to Ember a little more room in revision. That could make the emotional impact even stronger

But if the character doesn’t have a personal reason to care about it, their reaction can feel forced. Motivation is definitely one of the things I pay attention to when beta reading, especially when looking at character development and whether their choices feel believable.

I’d just slow down the seizure moment slightly so the emotional impact has more room to breathe. I’d also clarify the small object he finds in the dust if it becomes important later. Fate remembering something completely different from what she’s told adds a great layer of mystery.

It sounds like you have a lot of moving pieces, so getting everything organized first makes sense. Whenever you’re ready, feel free to send it over, and I’ll be happy to take a look and help you see what’s working and what could be strengthened.

I really like the point about nonfiction still needing to keep the reader engaged, even when the focus is research and information. Accurate sources are important, but so is making the material feel interesting and accessible. Do you currently have anyone giving you feedback on your work?

Five minutes is short enough to take the pressure off but still gives you enough time to create something interesting. I especially like the idea of sharing the strongest sentence instead of trying to make everything perfect.

Nazhe's entrance. You can immediately feel his authority, and the chamber is easy to picture. I’d maybe trim a little of the description to keep the scene moving and just make sure Nazhe’s dialect stays easy to follow. Overall, I’m really curious to see where this conversation goes.

Shifting Vista by Rowan Wilcher. A curated non-fiction volume on art, war, and culture (2018–2026). Published by Eikvos with illustrations. eikvos.com/en/
Shifting Vista: Non-fiction & Co

Have you ever contemplated writing a non-fiction book, only for it to remain a mere idea? If so, you are far from alone. Uncertainty regarding the approach often proves to be an insurmountable hurdle. Imagine finding yourself at a standstill, while the world around you succumbs to cultural erosion and the silence of censorship. What then?

The answer lies in a thoughtful reading of Shifting Vista. More often than not, the stumbling block is the content itself. Shifting Vista challenges you to view that content through a different lens. The philosophy is simple: more rigour at the start, less revision at the end.
