This National Sibling Day, we’re celebrating the powerful role siblings play in shaping understanding, empathy & lifelong support. For volunteers, like Marcus, growing up alongside a sibling with additional needs can build a deep sense of compassion & a drive to create more inclusive spaces.

Why I volunteer,

Having a brother with Down syndrome, I grew up around disability and additional needs and I had been looking for a way to use my experience to help others. Keen was exactly what I was looking for.

I was introduced 2 years ago through a friend who has similar experience and never looked back. Everyone is amazing and Saturday mornings became my favourite part of the week.

Lots of media coverage surrounding yesterday’s SEND White paper. While we are not responsible for statutory SEND provision, we want to remind you we are always here to talk. Our focus remains unchanged - to provide consistent, inclusive & supportive sessions for children with additional needs.

The send white paper. You may have seen media coverage about the government’s recently published SEND white paper, which sets out proposals for reforming the send system in England

We wanted to reassure you that this is only a consultation and not a law.

There are no immediate changes to existing legal rights to entitlements, including EHCPs and current arrangements remain fully in place

The government will run a consultation period of 12 weeks before any further decisions are made. Any changes to the send system would be phased over several years

While keen is not directly responsible for statutory send provision, we are always here to listen.

At KEEN, we view autism as a different way of seeing the world rather than as a disorder. 90% of the athletes we support have autism so a KEEN session is more than acceptance and awareness, it’s a celebration of what makes us all different.

We’re supporting world autism acceptance month

Did you know

More than one in 100 children in the UK are autistic.

Autism can affect communication, relationships, social skills, and self-regulation.

Boys are more commonly diagnosed than girls. Signs of autism can look different in girls, so it’s more easily missed or misdiagnosed.

Autism is not a learning disability or a mental health condition

Making comms ovation accessible

* Slow down It can be overwhelming if you speak too quickly.

* Be patient and take time to listen people with autism may need longer to process what you’ve said and respond. This doesn’t mean that they aren’t listening or that they don’t understand.

* Say what you mean. Many people with autism think literally, so it may be helpful to avoid slang, idioms, and sarcasm.

* Be adaptable and remember that speaking is only one way of communicating. Up to 30% of autistic children are non-speaking and may communicate through other ways, like gestures, eye contact, actions, or sign language.
