I hope people understand that many of our Somali American neighbors lived for 10yrs or more in Dadaab. They also struggled through aid cuts, insecurity, depression, family separation and so much more. Considering all those circumstances, targeting Somali Americans can only be described as diabolical

Haiba Bille Hussein: “We don’t want to be separated. We fled from clan/tribal separations, and now it seems like the Kenyan government, WFP, and [the] UN want to separate us along those lines again. This separation is tribal. Problems will arise from it and we won’t be responsible for them.”

When you close off every opportunity -- especially for young people -- to escape the camp and build a better life, you are inviting more danger into their lives, whether from disillusionment and drug dependency, irregular migration, or any off the dangers poverty produces.

With drastically reduced food assistance and direct cash assistance, far less work because aid cuts have enormously reduced the cash circulating in the camp, hurting small businesses and casual laborers, and the number of jobs with aid agencies available in the camp has also shrunk dramatically.

In 2024, the US resettled about 2700 people who were living in Dadaab Refugee Camp. In 2025, it as less than 200. This year, none. Refugees coming through resettlement are vetted over a period of YEARS.

Their fear pales in comparison to the fear in the Somali American community right now. I posted previously about the difficulty Somalis' born before 1991 had in securing documents. It's why so many Somalis in the diaspora have Jan 1 birthdays. This move strikes fear in every on of those Americans.

During the Red Scare, my uncle joined the air force in one of those, join-up or jail situations. A few months later the FBI knocked on my immigrant grandparents' door. My uncle had listed my grandfather's name wrong (went by his middle name). Scared the hell out of them that they'd be deported.

Mikuba | Cobalt Dir. Petna Ndaliko Katondolo, 2025, 63 min. Kiswahili, French w/ English subtitles In the cobalt mines of Kolwezi, Mikuba follows Mama Leance, a determined trader navigating a region dominated by multinational mining companies and the global demand for cobalt.
Image looks down into a cobalt mine. The vantage point is from behind the sound guy carrying a boom mic. There are sandbags stacked up on the sides of the dirt path as it descends into the mine itself. There are workers in the background.

Journalist Lynn Ngugi sets him straight after his apology.
Reply to his apology on X from Lynn Ngugi, a Kenyan journalist and media personality.

You’re pathetic, and your apology is just as pathetic. Let’s not pretend you’ve suddenly developed some respect for Kenyans or Africans. You’re apologizing because Kenyans dragged you for your ignorance, and had nobody called you out, you’d have gone about your business without thinking twice about what you said.

And this is exactly how you idiots still think of Africa. You were discussing immigration in America, a country with enough problems of its own and lots of rats, but somehow Nairobi became your example of everything wrong with a city. What the hell does Nairobi have to do with your immigration problems?

What annoys me even more is how casually you said it. That’s how deeply ingrained this ignorance is. To some of you, Africa is still that miserable, backward place you can casually throw into a conversation whenever you need an example of poverty, chaos or failure.

And then when Africans refuse to sit quietly and take your nonsense, suddenly you’re sorry.
You’re not sorry you said it, Rob. You’re sorry we heard you, understood exactly what you meant and refused to let you get away with it.

Keep your apology. What you need is to unlearn the garbage that made you think saying something like that was acceptable in the first place🚶🏿‍♀️WANTAM!!
