Despite its name, the Grand American Ball Park is one of the smaller ballparks. It overlooks the Ohio River, white columns supporting its bleachers, a concrete fiasco of highways at its back. Zach can see it from where his car is parked on the narrow shoulder of the road, traffic passing close enough to make his seat rumble.

You don’t have to. It’s a terrible thought, one Reid should swipe away. Not a new one, either. He’d said it to his grandma a few times—that she didn’t have to let him live with her or worry about him or do a hundred other things on his behalf. All of which made her scowl and feed him soup and insist that he escort her to New York Gothams games so that she could show him that chronic failure didn’t make people love you any less.

Until he continued. “It’s not criticism to point out that having Pride Night on a Thursday and a Faith and Family Night on a Monday—with a church that’s not known for its tolerance—aren’t exactly consistent organizational values.” At that, the owner’s knuckles bleached white. The GM’s grin was closer to a grimace. Isabel made a noise akin to a kettle venting its steam. Eitan should probably buy her something. Maybe she had a dog—he was great at dog gifts—or he could get her one of those edible bouquets where all the fruit was shaped like flowers.
