Yeah. This one of the few comments to accurately describe how Canada's parliamentary system works. Danielle Smith doesn't seem to understand how her government works.

Yes! Not only will "driving" be less expensive, but we won't be burning fossil fuels. I am in Kamloops, B.C. The air quality is horrific due to wildfires. Environment Canada says 10+ on their 1-10 scale. I have trouble breathing.

Yes. Senator Cruz was born down the road from me in Calgary. I wanted to fund raise to buy the house, burn it to the ground, plow it under, and then salt the earth. But my wife said no.

If we are going to continue to produce fossil fuels, and suffer the consequences of environmental damage, Canada should nationalize the entire sector.

Yes! What part of the Canadian West are we discussing? Southern Alberta and parts of central B.C.? The attempt to see the West as an ideological monolith is nonsense. It seems the loudest, far-right voices get the most attention.

A road map first the Alberta separatists is in "Moment of Truth," an edited collection on Alberta's future. It contains essays on an independent Alberta. It helps shed light on what the separatists are working towards.

There has been a lot of chatter comparing the Alberta separatists to Brexit. A good comparison. A better model is found in Robert Jackson's The Secession of Quebec and the Future of Canada. Jackson uses the break-up of Czechoslovakia to describe what would happen if Quebec left Confederation.

Keith Brownsey @kdbrownsey.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
Can't we tell the separatists how stupid the idea of an independent Alberta is? Or how unusually bent the concept of Alberta as the 51st state is? It would give me a great deal of satisfaction.

Under the Constitution Act 1867 there are 29 enumerated powers under s.91 assigned to the federal government. And 16 enumerated powers assigned to the provinces under s.92. The authors of the C.A. 1867 believed that the provinces would wither away, becoming no more than glorified municipalities.
020
Keith Brownsey @kdbrownsey.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
Danielle Smith does not appear to have read the Constitution Act 1867, that is sections 91 and 92 or any of the other sections related to concurrent jurisdiction.

Keith Brownsey @kdbrownsey.bsky.social · 23/05/2026
Let's not forget Peace, Order and Good Government. This is the opening of s.91 of the Constitution Act 1967. The national government can legislate in any area, even those assigned to the provinces. Smith and her advisors don't appear to understand this.

When are Albertans going to discuss the enormous costs and difficulties of establishing a separate country. What of passports, criminal law, border control, military? These are a few of the thousands of issues which would need solutions immediately.

Keith Brownsey @kdbrownsey.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
I am confused. The illustrious Alberta premier, Danielle Smith, claims there is a long-suffering separatist movement in Alberta. News to me. There has been a separatist fringe gor dome time, but it is Smith who has brought it mainstream.

This is "sort of" true. Our longest serving Prime Minister was Mackenxie King at 22 years. A recent example is Justin Trudeau at just over nine years. And Stephen Harper at just under ten years. The shortest term was Kim Campbell in '93. Under five months.

At best, it would be unwise to "throw out" the U.S. ambassador. It would only antagonize Trump and his minions. Better to keep Hokstra around to remind us how much we don't like the republic to the south.

Keith Brownsey @kdbrownsey.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
Canada does not have fixed elections. There is legislation stating when an election will be held in some provinces. But no government is bound by it. No parliament can bind a future parliament (or legislature) in a Westminiter system.

The Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund is over $1trillion. An enormous amount of money. It invests in a wide array of industries and projects. Alberta had an opportunity to build a similar fund, but decided to keep taxes as low as possible.

This is an excellent rebuttal to the UCP propaganda campaign released yesterday. The best outcome for Alberta is for Smith is to resign and move permanently to Panama. Never to be heard from again.
