Q: How to handle institutional affiliation? A: Consult your institutional policy. Remember that standing in facts doesn't need to be divisive. You can ask for a line at the end of your bio clarifying that these viewpoints are your own and not your institution's.

Q: How do you communicate uncertainty? A: "My best estimate..." It is okay to communicate uncertainty, but hedging should not be central to your pitch.

Takeaway 11: The first op-ed you write will be the hardest.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 10: Editors are busy. Keep your pitch email short. No attachments. Follow up after 5 days. Rejection is common!
200
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 9: Match your argument to the right outlet. Who needs to hear this? What do they already read? Stop aiming national as an entry point -- hard to break into and needs to be relevant to broad swaths of the population. Consider local or sector-specific outlets or more niche/online formats.
110
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 8: Draft fast first, then cut ruthlessly.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 7: Make a clear and defensible claim -- don't hedge.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 6: Seriously though, cut the jargon!
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 5: Show don't tell. Ditch the abstractions and use a specific example or story.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 4: The op-ed isn't the place for airing out all the nuances. Pick a point and support it in accessible terminology.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 3: Remember your audience -- a sea of strangers! You need a hook, a brief and clear singular argument, evidence (2-3 compelling data points or examples), and a call to action.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 2: Center people in the story -- use active voice.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 1: CUT THE JARGON! Talk to the reader instead of at them.
100

Next up! Raquel Wojnar from @prbdata.bsky.social. Starting us off with an exercise comparing first draft and final versions.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 8: If you make a mistake or misspeak, follow up! It isn't as catastrophic as you think -- they want to report the facts and don't want to make you look bad. There are creative ways to get the right info into the story even if it doesn't make it into a video or audio interview.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 7: Build relationships with local media. Use your institutional communications teams to help you build skills and vet outlets.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 6: Confirm if you are on background or on quote. This prevents "gotcha" moments (which are generally rare), but also helps you understand if you want to theorize or stick very closely to the facts.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 5: Be ready to provide resources and references that support journalists and streamline fact-checking. Being a conduit for information builds relationships and promotes accuracy.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 4: Know the limits of your knowledge and be ready to suggest someone who can pick up the thread where your expertise ends or who might present a thoughtful alternate viewpoint.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 3: Respond quickly with clear expectations about availability. A detailed response might be urgent, but there may be flexibility if you are just on background.
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 2: Be persistent and flexible. If you don't hear back move on to a different outlet. Your idea of key timing may not work well with the news cycle -- hard to compete with wars or government shutdowns; seasonality of topical coverage
100
Kari Williams @kcww.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Takeaway 1: Distill your expertise to bring attention to an issue that might not otherwise be caught up in the headlines. Why is it urgent? What is the issue at hand? Why does it matter?
