Follow @TheLimitlessLadies for more real stories of women who were told no and kept going anyway.Elinor Ostrom was born in Los Angeles in 1933 and grew up during the Great Depression. She was a poor kid at Beverly Hills High School. Nobody in her immediate family had gone to college, and her mother saw no reason to pay for it. So Elinor worked in a library, a dime store and a bookstore, and finished UCLA in three years with no debt. When she looked for work, employers asked if she could type.UCLA’s economics department told her not to try for a Ph.D. Political science let her in as one of four women in a class of 40, and the faculty argued about it.In 1965 she followed her husband Vincent to Indiana University, where she was hired to teach freshmen at 7:30 in the morning. She spent 15 years studying police departments, co-founded the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis in 1973, and in 1990 published Governing the Commons with eight design principles for shared resources. In 2009, she became the first woman to win the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. She gave the prize money to her Workshop. She taught at Indiana for 47 years and died in 2012, aged 78.Elinor wrote that she learned not to treat a first rejection as a permanent obstacle. If a first “no” ever made you stop, her story proves it is not the last word. It’s a shame more women don’t know about owning something yourself.Comment “2026” below and I’ll DM you a FREE training showing you the A-Z process.
