Friday night film: Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 remake of Suspiria, and all I have to say is bravo to my gender-fluid king, Tilda Swinton. (And Thom Yorke’s score)
Images of Tilda Swinton playing three roles in Suspiria: Madame Blanc, Dr. Josef Klemperer (an old German man), and the ancient grotesque witch, Helena Markos

Tonight’s horror flick was John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness. Surface religious horror aesthetic (throw in some nuns and a shit ton of crucifixes and candles) + fake academia (tweed, briefcases, random philosophizing). Count me in. But where the hell was the grad student union?

i hope that men notice how whenever a rape story gets widespread coverage, women use it as an opportunity to vent about how fucking disgusting we think many of you are and how many have made our lives measurably worse, and take a few moments to deeply process that.

This is one of the best documentaries that I've seen in a very long time. It balances poetic storytelling with expository heft. Even if you know the historical arc, this film likely adds depth to your cultural analysis of who is a zombie and why we make zombies.

I’m so excited about where horror is & is going. When I started in 2016 I didn’t see much room for me & just before EORS I was ready to quit. I’m so glad I didn’t; horror has become more welcoming & diverse in the past 10 years & it’s heartening to see so many fighting for it to be a good space. 🖤

So apparently that HWA pro-AI newsletter also uses Indigenous water rights issues as a prop, trivializing the activism by Indigenous peoples to protect our water including specific anti-data centre actions. I guess they figured why not alienate Indigenous horror writers while they’re at it?
“Sure. Sure.

Yes, we know AI is using up resources. So does driving a car or a planes so does building a new home. So do a lot of things. Humans have always used up Earth’s resources and usually not nicely. There are reservations and other Indigenous communities in Canada that have never had clean water and have been ravaged by pipeline construction. But somehow that’s been okay for the past fifty or a hundred years, and very few people scream about that. But suddenly, AI is the enemy, not everything else we’ve been doing all along. Suddenly YOUR water might not be clean, so it’s a Big Deal”.

We’ve been burning through some Criterion films recently and watched Lone Star for the first time. I was not expecting such a nuanced portrayal of race, identity, and immigration in a Texas border town from a 1996 film. Damn. It seemed downright prescient. Would recommend
