Big storm last night
Front on picture of a small apartment building with two trees in front of it. One of the trees is leaning back against the front of the building with its roots pulling upSide view of the same tree as the previous picture. The tree is leaning at a 60 degree angle, over the sidewalk. A tree just past its sappling phase completely folded over from the storm, with nothing obviously on it.

It's always looked this way, right?

Friday was a good night to be at a cabin up north
Green northern lights in the sky, with silhouetted trees and a cabin lining the horizon. Orange light is shining through the cabin windows.

While poking around at the Saint Paul city survey map (as one does) I noticed an oddity around Lake Phalen, the golf course has a grid of city owned right-of-way covering it. Was this a relic of a plan that never came to be? A former neighborhood demolished by urban renewal? I sure couldn't say.

It's worse than that. ChatGPT automatically assumes men are older than women (due to age disparities in online representation), associates older people as more qualified (due to more senior titles in online representation), and entangles all three factors. Unsurprising but awful.

Last two planes trying to pull in to MSP ahead of the storm thought better of it at the last second
Flight path of a delta airlines flight which descended on approach almost to the runway threshold before deciding to go around. A second plane that abandoned their approach is also in frame.

If you live in this area you have an election tomorrow! I'm very excited that Peter Wagenius is running to represent Senate District 60. He's been an impressive driving force for Sierra Club's work at the capital and really understands the connections between climate, land use, and transportation.

You can use "sea level rise" simulators to get a rough idea of what 10ft of storm surge in Tampa looks like and it's real bad folks coast.noaa.gov/slr/

Special delivery across the street
Looking out the window at a tree lined street. There are cones blocking off half the street. A crane arm towers over the trees twice their height. It has lifted a medium size cardboard box into the air.

It's a little surprising that it's on such a steep slope but not like in a ravine. The amount of broken plates and bottles makes me think it's human garbage and not from an eagle or something, no sign of a good perch above. And it's a really big pile.
The pile is a little ways up a steep slopeLooking uphill at the midden, lots of broken plate and bones and shellfish shellsIt's a big midden

I came across a decent size midden on the hillside behind the Villas of Lilydale Senior Apartments along the Big Rivers Trail but I'm having a hard time imagining why it would be there specifically

Somehow it seems right that for North America the furthest point from any ocean is basically Wall, SD, based on my totally professional google maps exploring

What really was surprising though was to see that this neighborhood was already mostly empty lots back in 1999, 10 years before the crash. It's the same for other neighborhoods in this donut around downtown too.
Black and white screenshot of Core City, Detroit from 1999. Each block is about half empty lots

This is a neighborhood labeled as "core city", it's just a mile and a half from the center of downtown.
