I hope the “being rude to AI is a slippery slope to being a murderer” folks that assert that if you’re willing to kill any life form, you’re more likely to be willing to kill people never find out how many plates of bacteria I’ve put into autoclaves.

As a child, that sounded crazy. After two decades in academia, I'm no longer surprised.

We talked about this in school, and from what I remember, many academics did more than just turn a blind eye. Many joined the NSDAP when it looked like this step would positively affect their funding.

Since we’re doing another round of “AI will destroy humanity” doom-hype, it’s a good time to announce a new paper myself and my postdoc advisor just had accepted by BioSocieties on just this. TL;DR: almost all the “AI can make bioweapons” literature comes ultimately from the Effective Altruists.

True. But seeing how hosted solutions can cost more money per month than a VPS costs per year, having a script run automatic updates is usually worth it. For hosted solutions, I guess Heroku is still around. Or I guess Vercel and Cloudflare host JS projects specifically.

Personally, I'd go for a cheap VPS and just install stuff. You have full control over your stack then.

I’ll get a bunch of reminders, and then a final “we needed to proceed without you”. And likely the authors will need to wait longer to get their manuscript reviewed.

I was in a thread on here recently discussing how editors are struggling to even get people to decline invites. I just got an invite from Food Biotech that requires me to create an Elsevier account to decline. It takes me one click to delete an email. Don't make it take > 3 clicks to decline.

Wait, no, scratch that, it’s not a subscription. You rent the toaster with a GPU in it, that runs a bit of compute for one of the frontier labs, and for the toaster rent, you get discounted tokens from said AI lab. Off to found my startup.

I guess whatever keeps those people away from raw milk is fine. If there is enough air in your bottles, vigorously shaking it before opening should break up the worst clumps. If it tastes good and doesn't trigger your immune system, that sounds easier than home-pasteurisation.

Is "cream on top" a way to say "non-homogenised"? My in-laws buy organic milk that uses the latter term to advertise. Apparently, people like the "less processing, closer to the farm" feel, and I've heard people talk of supposed health benefits that are very [citation needed].

It just depends on how tight you define "possible efforts." Fable "safety filters" refused all requests I had with the word "microbial" in there. I can totally imagine Anthropic counting every triggering of the biosafety filter as a "possible attempt."

The reason Claude did well at binder design is because the prompt hardcoded that it should use ESMFold2 for scoring, and apparently ESMFold2 is really good. It's also only a few months old so not widely used yet. AI in biology keeps disappointing. blog.genesmindsmachines.com/p/anthropic-...

I think it's rich that the company that not only failed to airgap its cybersecurity benchmark network, but also didn't even bother to monitor it or install current patches keeps talking about how we need to buy their products to improve our system security.

I have to be honest, if the invite reads like they didn't spend 15 seconds to make sure that manuscript was in my area of expertise, I'm struggling to spend my time responding. Also, if your invite requires me to create an account just to decline, I'll be deleting that email.

Kai Blin @kblin.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
I haven't tried the current generation, but I previously managed to get GPT to regurgitate some of our AGPL licensed code in a new project when prompting for that kind of functionality. Some as in a function or two. So you still could get into copyright trouble.

They look neat. One thing I would consider adding is a small "larger number is better" note, especially if you will also show charts where smaller numbers are better. Also, about 5 % of the world has a red/green colour deficiency, even higher here in Europe. I'd avoid red and green in charts.

Ah, and of course they also indulge in a little slop-rewriting-to-rust, as one does. ladybird.org/posts/adopti... I guess if Firefox and Chromium are using Rust, you can't be a proper browser without.

Yeah, I mainly meant that you shouldn't be using Firefox directly, just like you shouldn't use Chrome. Go for something more trustworthy using the engine you want.
