The latest evil Democratic spam is jerks like VoteVets (@BeeReal4Real) signing you up for their Substack and then begging for money. How foul. This is why I remain an Independent. Thanks, Dems. Thanks, Substack. It'll be a cold day in hell before you get a penny for me.

I took him out for his usual walk. He decided he'd climb this tree as fast as he could. WHAM! And he's up. I took this photo, and a second later, I caught his 18-pound (that's 1 and a quarter stone) bulk as he fell off. #caturday

So once, when Slavoj Žižek was giving a talk at UCLA on Agamben, he was discussing Homo Sacer, and throughout it I thought he said Homo Sucker because I hadn't read that book by Agamben and wasn't familiar with it. I thought he was making fun of Agamben. 1/2

How is it that I can have a truly insightful discussion about Raúl Ruiz's fabrication of citations in Poetics of Cinema with a frontier AI, but Simplisafe's internet-connected smoke detectors wake me at 1:30 am by beeping randomly instead of just saying they need new batteries?

It's wild how much more efficient and effective it is to ask a late frontier model like Fable or Astra to look something up instead of using a search engine.

Alright, my post about using Astra to make 3d gridfinity bins was kind of silly. But how about a model of my pal Ajman. That's a lot more tokens. And yes, this is done with Blender and yes, it slices. Now that's slop!

My god, we knew it all along. The migration crisis of the last 15 years was engineered by Russia but nobody wanted to say anything. Not Merkel, Obama, Trump, or Rubio. It was until the Lithuanians started pushing back the weaponized migration of Iraqs from Belarus in 2021 that I heard anything. See…

It’s a bummer to space nerds to realize that in just a few years there again won’t be any reliable and frequent crewed launch capability to earth orbit like there was with Falcon 9. We have no workable replacement for Dragon.

One of the weirdest AI glitches that I've seen lately is how Google's AI summary treats Barthes's phrase "Since myth robs myth, why not rob myth?" Sometimes it gets it right, often it gets it wrong.

Why Master and Commander Never Got a Sequel
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World was supposed to be the first of many movies. Russell Crowe and most of the cast signed on expecting a franchise, but the sequel never happened. Now this would have been fun to do in the early 1960s. Take the X-15's XLR99 rocket engine, throttle it way down, then open it up for the land speed record. Aim first at 700, then 800, then Mach 1.

Life with a 3D printer (Bambu Labs X2D) has weirdly reconfigured my life in ways I hadn't predicted. Now I calculate it so I can have a final print done at bedtime and then run a huge overnight print, such as Gridfinity containers.

The Tastemakers, 2026 - varnelis.net
In February 1949, Harper’s published the essay “Highbrow, Lowbrow, Middlebrow” by its managing editor, Russell Lynes. There, he observed a new structure determining prestige in the country: where once wealth and family were the markers of status, now taste and intelligence—what Pierre Bourdieu would later call cultural capital—were paramount. Two months later Life magazine had ... <a title="The Tastemakers, 2026" class="read-more" href="https://varnelis.net/the-tastemakers-2026/" aria-label="Read more about The Tastemakers, 2026">Read more</a>

Have some of those filthy old yellow book scans to clean up, you know from the public domain books you got from archive.org? Have a modern Mac? Claude helped me rewrite Scantailor so that it processes PDFs instead of images and does so very, very fast. And it's integrated into Zotero. 1/2
