I spent 20+ years on the hedonic treadmill, only to realize it doesn't lead anywhere. Now I'm a metamodern hippe living in the far north with my husband […] [bridged from unstraight.club/@kazarnowicz on the fediverse by fed.brid.gy ]

This response to “is it possible to be bigger than a blue whale?” In r/AskScience is an absolute masterclass in how to make your PhD accessible to the public. I knew about the thermoregulation issue, but the others were news to me. Like 37 BPM being the maximum heart rate, down to 2 when diving […]

One piece of advice I’d give anyone who’s discovering writing is to get a second hobby, if you don’t already have one. I’ve found that meaningful activities that don’t have anything to do with the story are quality marination time. Sometimes you need to step away from the picture for a while to […]

Apple’s AutoMix is starting to sound like a DJ who never heard the song he’s about to play. All the DJ knows is the BPM of the next song, but they cannot understand the vibe. Stochastic Parrot DJs, what a time we live in, eh?

We just finished watching Ted Lasso. It’s easily one of my favorite TV shows, together with The Good Place and Killjoys. The way they package conflict and drama in kindness is so wholesome and human. The cast is great, but Hannah Waddingham is in a league of her own. What an actress! (Soon […]

I'm glad I stayed away from is tips on editing. Discovering being a discovery writer also means discovering your own editing process. Once I found my voice and narrating style for the books, I've settled in a rhythm that feels right: I write a chapter, read through it and edit it, then move on […]

It's heartbreaking to see how long it takes for a dog to fully trust humans after being abused as a puppy. Ori, our youngest, is six years old and has been with us for five years now. It's first now we see the cuddly side of him. A new current ritual of his is to give my hands and/or face a […]

On a personal note: I've taken the first step to getting an official autism diagnosis. Being back in a school environment, this time as a teacher, gives me frequent flashbacks to my own childhood seen through the lens of me being autistic. One memory is physical: as a teenager, I had what […]

My students are at the nervous system, and looking in the text books gives me flashbacks from having my mind blown as a twelve-year old in science class: The fact that the image that hits our retina is upside down. Our brain turns it right. It brings the fact that we're hallucinating reality […]

Is it just my weird corner of the internet, or has it become more and more common that random pages (in the most recent case: sciencedirect.com) throw up Cloudflare's "confirm that you're human" page with just a tick-box? Cloudflare must host so much of the internet that it would be a prime […]

One thing I've learned so far from discovering being a discovery writer, is that you can't speed up the process. The journey cannot be reduced to cliff notes. I haven't written much for almost two years simply because it was like trying to grasp for glimpses of light whenever I saw a scene from […]

Every summer, I'm grateful for unions (socialism!) that gave us 5 week vacation time. T Our first four weeks have been lovely. Midsummer at Piteå Havsbad, the latter a quintessential Swedish experience. Sweden's largest camping ground at the Gulf of Bothnia features a water park, padel boards […]

Life update: working in an elementary school is among the most meaningful jobs I've had. It's also one of the most demanding and I'm just a substitute. There's a Swedish verb for a mass that has had soluble components removed through percolation: "urlakad". It's used metaphorically for humans […]

It's rare that I read a book that stays with me for years after I've finished it. Octavia Butler's Parable duology is among the best books I've read. Maybe it's because it's so prescient. Written in the 90s, it plays out in 2024, and has a fascist president candidate running with the slogan […]

I've been pondering the difference between “unconscious" and "subconscious". I think that they're like two circles in a Venn diagram that overlap to a large degree. I believe that what Kahneman calls "System 1" in “Thinking Fast and Slow" is the process on the border between the conscious and […]
