fic progression! my curiosity won out over my shame, lmao. i dont think i've reread anything before 2023 on my ao3 ever, but here's the opening of a cherik ficlet from when i posted it in 2011 (i wrote it a little before that) 😬 Then my first hb fic, from 2024, and my most recent #kazwrites

I looked at him, saw the pain etched in his broken smile, his pleading gaze. Remembered the day we'd met, when I had calmed him, had saved his life, back when he actually listened to what I said. Going to find the mutants, gathering them together. Moving the satellite dish. The beautiful memory of his birthday, with his mother, that I'd witnessed - I knew there was good in Erik, somewhere. It was just buried under all of the hate, I was convinced of it. I could bring it out. I almost had. It was just a little bit too soon. Given some more time, I knew I would succeed. I would make Erik see, make him understand.

I would help him to trust again. Not just mutants, either, but people, too. I had faith.

I thought briefly about what it would be like if I told him no - if I was strong enough to explain to Erik that what we wanted was, in fact, very different. If Erik left right then, and we became enemies, both trying to determine the other's next move, to stay one step ahead. Would Erik really go after the humans? Did he have that much anger in him?

I was almost sure, then, that he most certainly did.

"...Alright," I breathed, the pain from the bullet wound nearly causing me to pass out as I said it. "Let's go."

Blitzø took a deep breath, and resisted the urge to throw his phone against the wall. He wasn't sure he could actually afford a new one until next week, at the earliest. He was already down two this month, and Moxxie had been on his case about it just yesterday.

But boy, the temptation was strong.

Everything had begun with a lie, so why was Stolas suddenly pretending any of it mattered? Blitzø lied about why he was at the Palace — as if either of them had been under any illusions about that for very long, they both knew he was there for the damned book — and Stolas pretended they had a bargain, instead of what it really was: Blitzø taking the only option available to him to keep his business running.

Or, well — there may have been other options, he supposed, but this was certainly the easiest, with plenty of perks. It just also ended up having the highest cost.

The only one Blitzø had to blame for that little blunder was himself, of course. Even he couldn't worm his way out of the reality of his own idiotic and self-destructive choices.

He looked at the text again, his stomach twisting with frustration and anger (that was it, that was all there was, he refused to acknowledge anything else, dammit) and typed out a reply.

He doesn't notice the way time passes in slow motion and then in rapid leaps forward, erratic and inconsistent. It doesn't matter, because everything is good and he's not going to question it. It's a gift horse, and he's no tooth doctor.

They go horseback riding, and Stolas wraps his arms tightly around his waist as they gallop across a wide, open field. Stolas is laughing, smile bright, pressed close against Blitz's back, feathers brushing the back of his neck and sending shivers and heat through all of his limbs and his heart races to the beat of the horse's hooves.

Blitz takes Stolas on a hit, and watches in awe as he melts into shadows with blood-red teeth and four sets of eyes and tears apart their target with no hesitation.

When Stolas sweeps him up and pulls him into a long kiss after, Blitz doesn't question that, either. It just feels right.

He wakes with a start to the obnoxious chime of his phone, and he scrambles to turn it off before it wakes up anyone else, only to realize it was just a notification ping and he chucks his phone away in irritation. The warm, floaty ease of the dream is dashed to pieces, his good mood crumbling and scattering, dissolving into nothing, and he feels heavy with the loss as he glances across the quiet room. The pre-Pentagram-rise light is still a dim red but it's enough to see the steady rise and fall of the blanket draped over Stolas where he's asleep on the couch, facing away from Blitz so all he can see is a tiny tuft of feathers peeking out from under the blanket.

The top are stolitz, the older one of them stargazing with Stolas' arm around Blitz and Blitz freaking out internally, and the more recent of Blitz holding Stolas and both of them staring intensely into the camera. Both have a fairly limited palette, to vastly different effect: left is muted purple-grey colors contrasted with sharp, textured lineart, right has high contrast and dramatic lighting, with saturated colors and more rounded lineart and stylization. Baz has also changed a bit, and I've gotten a lot better at mimicking the helluva aesthetics when I want to. In both cases the Baz art was done about a month before the stolitz art.
