“From Blue Sky: Bierstadt, Grays & Torreys” 24”x36”, acrylic on canvas. Finished tonight, this view along the ridge between Mt. Blue Sky and Mt. Bierstadt, 50-ish miles W of Denver, CO. Halfway through, I wasn’t sure but I think I’ve come around. Please let me know what you think. #painting #fineart
Bright summer day at 13,000’/3962 m on the ridge between Mount Bluesky and Mount Bierstad in Colorado; Grays and Torreys Peaks on the far horizon. Snow still occupies a few ravines, but the predominant colors are tan, red, green, and blue.

Well, that took a lot of paint… 1) Tin Roof, Washoe County 20”x24”, acrylic/canvas. 2) Downside of acrylic: it dries fast (good on canvas, but frustrating on the palette). This would be a mess to scrape now so I’ll let it dry for a few days. #artist #painting #landscapeart #westernart #nevada
A mountain ridge with snow-filled ravines form the backdrop for sage and piñon pine-covered hills. Tin roofed buildings—the same blue as the sky—rest in the foreground. On the left, a stand of brilliant yellow aspen glow in autumn splendor.

For an artist’s account, I don’t post all that much art—figure it’s time to start. Untitled work on the easel, not quite done. 36”x24”, acrylic/canvas. Northern end of Taylor Park, Gunnison County, CO. #painting #fineart #Colorado #landscapepainting #acrylicpainting

Know how many times over the past 3 yrs I’ve been notified that there’s been a break-in at my bank, Dr’s, or a govt office & someone’s stolen my files? Zero. Number of online data breaches? Today makes thirty. Seriously, fuck your “online convenience”—I’ll fill out your paperwork when I get there.

High Desert Snowstorm with Joshua Trees, 10“ x 10“, acrylic on canvas. A few details + my limited (for me) palette. Happy w/the the lighter values on the Joshua trees in the background. Sometimes things turn out the way you intend. Based on a circa 2001 photo when I spent a winter working in SoCal.
Painted from a couple of photos taken in the El Paso Mountains, Kern County, CA, sometime Dec-Feb 2001 (date approximate). A Great Depression-era cabin with corrugated tin sides in a snowy landscape with three Joshua trees. Not sure of my photos’ locale—maybe Colorado Canp or Dutch Camp.Detail 1Detail 2Palette

Anyoneone else sick of Ai intruding on every single online activity? No, I don’t want Ai to re-write my email—I got it right the first time and anyway, you suck except as a way to assemble raw intelligence that has to be scrubbed for hallucinations and other fuckups.

Autumn starting to sneak its way into my paintings. Charles Lake below Fools Peak, Eagle County, CO, 18”x24”, acrylic on canvas. #art #artist #painting #acrylicpainting #colorado #fall #landscape #landscapepainting #westernartist #westernart
Red and yellow grasses and plants in the foreground; the green, timbered lower slopes of Fools Peak reflected in Charles Lake (Holy Cross Wilderness, Eagle County, CO). The mountain’s gray bulk becomes blue & hazy as it rises against a sky dotted with umbral clouds.

First pass/rough-in. I usually do a LOT of under-drawing but this time, for whatever reason, I just started painting. Barely underway; much more to do—I think. No real idea where this one’s going at the moment. Kind of liberating, tho. #art #painting #acrylicpainting #landscapepainting #westernart
A partially-completed acrylic painting with rows of back-lit clouds; the lowest 1/3 of the canvas is still blank.

Birds planted sunflowers in our back yard a few years ago. Tallest one among this year’s patch toppled in high winds 2 days ago, so, a free, late-summer bouquet. Thank you, birds long gone, for flowers & the message: go make something beautiful that’ll outlive you. #art #artist #summer #colorado

Two paintings of the high desert in northern Nevada. Beautiful, lonely country with big weather and profound silence—just the wind and trickling water. Titles in the ALT text. #art #painting #acryliconcanvas #landscapepainting #westernart #nevada
“Snow Squall Over Contact, Northern Nevada,” 11”x15”, acrylic on canvas. Contact is a semi-ghost, copper mining town that boomed around WWI but didn’t last long. Snow on the side of a square-top butte above two derelict buildings surrounded by dry winter grass and sage.“China Mountain & Hanks Peak, Northern Nevada,” 10”x10”, acrylic on canvas. Snow-clad mountains above rolling sage-and-grasslands. Turbulent skies above. Sketch/speed-painting this morning—the snow-patches, alone, took longer than the rest of the piece.

Nighttime lighting in my studio/office is really yellow so the colors are washed out in this photo, but I’m happy with how this one turned out: “Exchequer Consolidated Mine, Winter,” 30”x30”, acrylic on canvas.
Looking up a steep slope to three mine buildings—two red, one green—with a snowy foreground and pine-forested ridge behind. Scaffolded stairs attached to a headframe form the left side of the painting. Sky is a brilliant, cloudless Colorado-winter blue.

“Gardner Lake on the Beartooth Plateau, Park Co., WY,” 10” x 10” acrylic/canvas. Rainy days at high elevation (10,000’ in this case) can make for tough driving/hiking, but they’re often great for painting. #Painting #Art #WesternArt #TraditionalArt #LandscapePainting #Mountains #Wyoming #Yellowstone
Boulders, brush, and grasses surround Gardner Lake, steel blue beneath rainy autumn skies. Gardner Lake is south of the scenic Beartooth Highway, a seasonal, high-alpine route between Red Lodge and Cooke City, MT, and just northeast of Yellowstone Nat’l Park.

“Rabbitbrush & Emigrant Peak, Park County, MT,” 18” x 24” acrylic on canvas. In MT for my sister’s wedding a couple years ago, her friends took me to a full-on Western movie-set they’d built. This is the view east (+1 of the set). #Painting #Art #WesternArt #LandscapePainting #Mountains #Montana
Rabbitbrush (a type of high-elevation sage native to the western US—known as chamiso in New Mexico) turns brilliant yellow in autumn. A large clump in the foreground contrasts with reddish grasses and the deep blue of 10,926’ Emigrant Peak on the skyline. Western movie-set near Emigrant, MT, with a steepled-wooden church and other false-fronted buildings at the foot of the Absaroka Range. Although 10,926’ Emigrant Peak dominates the skyline, it was hazy and pale due to forest fires burning in Idaho at that time (September 2022).

Foreground slope strewn with lichen-covered boulders and small tundra flowers; forested canyon with low-lying clouds in the mid-distance. Snow-dotted peaks along the Continental Divide from a skyline beneath partly cloudy skies.

Small (10” x 10”) acrylic on canvas of a shadowed autumn basin in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. Took several passes to get the values right on the talus fields in the mid-distance. Midweek in autumn is the best time up into the high country: consistently good weather, & the traffic drops by 2/3.

Overhead of my kitchen table. Spent the last evening stretching paintings I’d created on canvas taped flat to a board. Funny how they seem larger as I’m painting, then shrink a little (you lose 1/8” on all sides) when stretched, & then a little more is lost under the rabbet once framed. Shrinkage…
