Daily Bird Fact: The Lesser Black-backed Gull wasn't documented in North America until 1934, while still rare, has been an increasing winter visitor. It is suspected they have established a new nesting colony somewhere in Canada, but the location is still a mystery. #birds #birding #funfact

Daily Bird Fact: American Crows form large communal roosting flocks in winter. These groups can range from hundreds to several thousand individuals. One of the largest recorded crow roosts, located in Danville, Illinois, was documented to have almost 100,000 crows. #birds #birding #birdnerd

Daily Bird Fact: Did you know that the House Finch isn't native to the eastern half of North America? They were actually released birds, illegally collected and sold as ‘Hollywood Finches’. They reproduced and their range quickly expanded. #birds #birding #birdnerd

The differences in coloration in the White-throated Sparrow is pretty fascinating. This change isn’t just in their color, but also behaviorally. White-morphs tend to be bolder and sing more. The tan-morph tends to be more passive, sing less and provide most of the parental care in the pair. #birds

Birdtober Day 4: Extravagant Tail Scissor-tailed Flycatcher This gorgeous Flycatcher is home to the open Great Plains, often seen perched on a fence post. Named after its large forked tail which allows it great maneuverability in the air, aiding in it catching aerial insects. #birds

Birdtober Day 3: Pollinator While when you think of pollinators, insects will often be first of mind, but birds can also fill this very important ecological role. In the deserts of the Southwest, White-winged Doves and Gila Woodpeckers can be important pollinators for the Saguaro Cactus. #birds

Couldn’t resist drawing the new bird hybrid discovered in Texas! This bird was hatched from a Blue Jay and a Green Jay. Due to climate change, both species range has recently overlapped in a small area in Texas. Second photo credit to Brian Stokes, who discovered this cool hybrid. #birds #birding

Another species that you tend to hear more than see. This elegant sparrow of the open meadows and prairies is a combo of light browns, tan and yellow. While it is often low to the ground, when they sing they will often perch out on an exposed perches to sing their insect-like song. #birds #art

What a cute little warbler! This bird can be found in high-elevation coniferous forests in a narrow range between Arizona, New Mexico down into Mexico. Because their preserved habitat is mature forests, logging poses a huge threat to their populations. #birds #art #warbler #birding #birdwatching

Did you ask for a bird fact? No, but you're getting one whether you like it or not. 🪶
Graphic with a photo of a Bald Eagle carrying a very large stick in its talons by Sunny on Flickr. An inset photo by Daniel Arndt shows a massive eagle nest in a tree. Text on graphic says: Unsolicited Bird Fact: Bald Eagles enjoy home improvement. They love to add sticks to their nests, and do so continuously throughout the breeding season. Because they reuse their
nests year after year, the nests can get enormous. In fact, Bald Eagles build one of the largest nests of any bird. One nest in Florida measured
9.5 ft wide by 20 ft tall. Another in Ohio weighed an estimated 2.2 tons!
Bald Eagle nests often get so big that they topple the tree they sit in.
