Last Saturday, despite being femmed up, I got hit with “sir, dude, man” by a random non-regular at the Warhammer store. I tried to put it out of my mind but it’s been sitting there like a time bomb.

The last two weeks there’s been this cute trans girl coming into the Warhammer store on Sundays. I don’t know much about her, other than she plays Age of Sigmar.

Anyway, I look at her and see happiness, and people around her have been respectful of her identity, even those who she doesn’t know, because of how she looks alone. I look at myself and I don’t get that. I’m always having to correct people, or say things to them, or my partner does it, or my Otter friend there, or the store manager. It’s never by default from others there aside from regulars.

I brought it up to my partner, said otter, said store manager on Sunday after she and her friends left. My partner tells me that it’s unfair of myself to judge myself against her, that I don’t know how long she’s been on HRT, how long she’s been out. This is objectively and logically correct. I know this mentally, but the larger portion of my mind, being the fucked up place it is, hears that and goes, “so it’s your fault, you transitioned too late now and you’re never going to get that feeling from randoms.”

I mention that, my Otter friend says in response, “you didn’t transition too late, transitioning too late would have been the day after you did it.” Again, logical sense, I recognize it, but my mind sits on it, “No, you should have came out in 2016 when you first planned on it, before someone you considered a friend threaten to out you as a lonely dude to everyone online who knew you as a girl, causing you to panic, do just that, and destroy every friendship there in the process. Anything after that is too late.”

I say this out loud, and there’s no response, just sad looks from those around me. It’s not news to my partner, but I still get physical comfort before I have to step outside for air.

And it’s just been sitting with me since Sunday. Hell, since last Sunday. I’ve talked to my therapist about it on Wednesday, and it’s still there.

The temptation to run away from it all is there. Just vanish and hope I can find somewhere else that I won’t have these issues. But If I go somewhere else, I have to do this all over again, and I can’t do that alone.

The last time I did this on my own in 2016, things got so bad I contemplated multiple times on various ways to cease being that would inconvenience as few people as possible, because at the time I felt that’s all I was to everyone around me.

So instead all I can do right now is just tell my brain to shut up, that my friends are right, and that it’s wrong; however, it’s so draining to have to be constantly doing it that I need more time off work, but I’m out of sick and vacation days, so my options are take a pay cut and go on short-term disability or persevere, and seeing as how I’m constantly playing catch up with bills and living, it’s just “suck it up at work and try not to completely collapse into a pile of mental mush.”
